Ahead of next month’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russian police killed four terrorists in the republic of Dagestan in an operation that also took the lives of three members of Russia’s security forces. The operation comes on the heels of two back-to-back terrorist bombings in Volgograd last month which killed 31 people.
In an unprecedented show of security designed to fend off threatened attacks by Islamist terrorists at the February 7-23 Games, Russia will be deploying 25,000 police officers and an additional 8,000 security personnel in Sochi. By comparison, London deployed two-thirds less security personnel during the last Olympic Games.
Individual countries participating the Games, including the U.S., will also be sending their own security details, with intelligence personnel anticipating that coordination will the Russian forces will be a nightmare.
As of last week, Sochi has been in a “lock-down,” operating under martial law. A special exclusion zone was instituted around the city Sochi, with only specially marked vehicles -- including emergency transport and intelligence service cars -- allowed entry into the wider Sochi area. Special clearance to enter the zone is required, including air and sea traffic which has also already been restricted.
The leader of the “Islamist Caucasus Emirate” group, Chechen arch terrorist leader Doku Umarov has called on all of his followers to wage war on the Games, saying the Games will be held on the “graves of Muslim occupants of Sochi, who he says were driven out by Russian imperial forces in the 19th century.”
Umarov’s vendetta against Russian President Vladimir Putin runs deep and hard as Putin based his career and reputation of crushing the Islamist separatist war in 1999. Urmarov is expected to try to wreak havoc on the Games as a means to humiliate Putin.
