New prosecutor will handle state and federal drug trafficking cases in North Dakota oil patch
Published January 16, 2014
FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota attorney general's office is looking for a new special prosecutor who will handle nothing but drug cases in the state's oil patch.
The new attorney will target drug trafficking organizations that have flocked to the Bakken region because of its booming population and economy. Crime overall has increased dramatically in western North Dakota.
The attorney will prosecute cases in state and federal court.
The position will be financed through the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program.
North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEN'-jem) says he hopes to have the position filled within two months.
U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon says the announcement is an important development in the effort to dismantle the drug trade.

My region has seen an influx of transient natural gas workers in the past few years, so it's probably not surprising the
federal prosecutor has "deputized" local law enforcement
personnel to deal with related drug crimes.
