Reid sets Wednesday vote on short-term CR

By Pete Kasperowicz

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has set up a Wednesday afternoon vote on a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that would keep the government running through Saturday.

Reid said debate on the resolution, H.J.Res. 106, would start at noon Wednesday, and last for 15 minutes. After debate, the Senate will proceed to vote on the bill, which means the Senate should pass it by about 12:45 p.m. if the schedule holds.

Senate passage will send the CR to the White House for President Obama's signature into law. It will also give Congress a few more days to pass a bigger bill funding the government for the rest of 2014.

Earlier Tuesday, the House passed the same short-term resolution after a debate that lasted just a few minutes. The House passed it in a voice vote.

Based on the Senate schedule, President Obama will have to sign the bill into law later on Wednesday, before current funding expires.

The House will start work on the $1 trillion omnibus spending bill on Wednesday, starting with a rule for the 1,500+ page legislation. That rule allows for an hour of debate on the bill, and the House is expected to pass it early Wednesday afternoon.

Is it any wonder bills never work as planned? A 1500 page bill, debated by 500 people. For a whole hour.
