The Kentucky GOP wants federal prosecutors to investigate claims by Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ed Marksberry that he was offered favors from high-profile party contender Alison Lundergan Grimes to drop out of the race, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
In a letter, state GOP Chairman Steve Robertson asks U.S. Attorney David Hale to look into an alleged “payoff scheme,” the newspaper reports.
Ms. Grimes hopes to take on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, in the general election. Her campaign has denied accusations that it offered future favors to Mr. Marksberry if he offered to drop out of the race.
Prior correspondence suggested that in exchange for quitting he wanted to find a place for his campaign manager on the Grimes campaign and to see his web designer debts paid, the Herald-Leader reported.
The alleged deal didn’t take hold, but Mr. Marksberry did drop out of the Democratic party and may run in the fall as an independent.
In his letter, Mr. Robertson asks the federal prosecutor to “appropriately prosecute the hiring/payoff scheme orchestrated by Secretary Grimes’ campaign and brought to light by none other than the offeree, Mr. Marksberry.”
