Iran’s foreign ministry on Tuesday denied reports that it would team up with the United States to combat al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq.

The statement came in response to a front page New York Times story claimed that Tehran and Washington were joining forces to combat al Qaeda, which has gained major victories lately in Iraq.

“The reports about cooperation between Iran and the [United States] in Iraq against the terrorist groups are not true,” Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham told Iranian reporters during a press conference on Tuesday, according to Iranian state-run media.

While Iran and al Qaeda have cooperated with one another in the past, the two experienced a falling out after an al Qaeda-aligned group claimed responsibility for the bombing of Iran’s embassy in Beirut last year.

Al Qaeda has since threatened to assassinate Iran’s top military general, while Iran has vowed to take it own aggressive action against the terror organization.

The State Department has also denied the the Times report, calling it untrue during a Tuesday’s press briefing.

So, in other words, it is true but neither side can be seen as admitting to it being true.
