Chicken from China? That's not safe!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is considering allowing poultry products processed in China to be shipped to the U.S. This questionable proposal has been in the works for years, and if it's finalized now, it would allow big corporations to ship raw poultry to China, process it there where costs (and safety standards) are lower, then ship it back to the U.S. to sell.

This plan might save these agribusiness giants some money, but it's no bargain for consumers. Chinese food safety problems are constantly in the news, and even the USDA admits that Chinese safety standards are too dangerous to allow raw poultry to be shipped back to the U.S. — but for some reason, poultry that's cooked and processed there is okay with the USDA. To make matters worse, a loophole in the country of origin labeling rules means that processed poultry products from China wouldn't have to be labeled as such.

Food & Water Watch strongly supports Representative Rosa DeLauro's efforts to stop this move by the USDA. Representative DeLauro has led efforts to block Chinese poultry imports since she was the chair of the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee.

Please sign the petition below to stop the import of chicken from China. We'll deliver your signature directly to your elected officials.

Keep Chinese Chicken Out of Our Supermarkets and School Meals

Petition

To: The Honorable Mark Pryor, The Honorable Robert Aderholt, The Honorable Roy Blunt, The Honorable Sam Farr, President Barack Obama and The Honorable Tom Vilsack

We urge Congress, President Obama and his Administration to stop chicken from or processed in China from reaching our supermarkets and the meals we feed our school children by

(1) ensuring that Chinese-processed chicken is not included in the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program, and

(2) preventing funds from being used to implement any rule that would allow poultry raised or slaughtered in China to be exported to the United States.

This is a matter of national public health safety. Thank you for protecting American consumers and school children from any potential food safety risks posed by chicken raised, slaughtered or processed in China.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Peeking at average freighter speeds, you are looking at a minimum 10 week round trip between China and the USA. Assuming they tranship live birds, that is 5 weeks of poop and feed to clear before they get slaughtered and processed and the tinned meat dropped back in the hold.

If they are shipping dead and frozen birds, where is the cost saving? The vast majority of any meat cost is in the slaughtering.

I dunno if chicken from China is all that good an idea. After all:

Wal-Mart recalls donkey meat in China

Quote
Wal-Mart says it will reimburse customers who bought the "Five Spice" donkey meat and the US firm is also helping local authorities with an investigation into its local supplier.

The Shandong Food and Drug Administration said the product contained fox meat.

Donkey meat is a popular snack in some parts of China.

Food safety is a sensitive issue in the country where recent scares have undermined consumer's confidence in the food supply chain.

Sales at KFC owner, Yum Brands, were hit when one of its chicken suppliers in China was found to have used excessive levels of antibiotics.

Wal-Mart is taking action to reassure shoppers, including setting-up a team to investigate the incident and strengthening its food safety rules.

It also intends to take legal action against the supplier of the tainted donkey meat.

The chief executive of Wal-Mart's Chinese operations, Greg Foran, said: "It is a deep lesson (for us) that we need to continue to increase investment in supplier management."

Don't you just hate it when you find out your donkey burger has fox in it?

I would think this story might be a put on but this version is from the BBC and it gets plenty of hits when you look for it on a search engine.
