Obama Makes 4-Minute Visit to Grandfather's Grave

President Barack Obama made time to visit his grandfather's grave during his two week Hawaii vacation. According to the White House pool report, Obama and his daughters took the 30-minute drive from their vacation rental home to his grandfather's grave. The visit lasted about 4 minutes.

Here's the pool report:


President Obama's motorcade made its way to Honolulu, passing by stunning vistas while occasionally being slowed by congested roads. After a 30-minute drive, Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia arrived at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Puowaina Punchbowl Crater.

Obama's grandfather, Stanley Dunham, is interred at the cemetery.

The president was not visible to the pool during a short visit.

Four minutes after arriving, Obama and his daughters were back in the motorcade. The next destination is unknown.

After departing the graveyard, Obama took his daughters to the zoo:


President Obama's motorcade made its way through the streets of Honolulu, arriving at 5:08 p.m. at the Honolulu Zoo.

The president, Malia and Sasha should have the zoo to themselves, as it closes at 4:30 p.m.

The zoo sits just off the coast, not far from Diamond Head crater and a short walk from bustling Waikiki Beach.

The pool is now holding in the van and will not be seeing the zoo or the president.

So - let me get this straight.

He stops to visit his Grandfathers grave. Fair enough, a decent thing to do.

He stays there for under a minute, allowing time for the walk to and from the car. This is the man (by all accounts a decent man) who took him in and raised him.

Yeah, real respectful, that.

WashPost reports Obama's schedule for Day 13 of the Royal Vacation. The newspaper must be racist to mention apes in the same paragraph as BHO:

— CEMETERY VISIT: Obama made a quick visit in the afternoon to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where his grandfather Stanley Dunham is interred.

— ZOO: After the cemetery, Obama traveled to the Honolulu Zoo near the tourist hotspots of Waikiki and Diamond Head. The zoo recently reopened its siamang exhibit, with a family of three apes.

A commenter at the White House Dossier blog asked whether grandma is buried next to grandpa Stan. Interesting question - why no mention of her?

Grandma took drastically ill after Obama's last visit to her - right after he was elected in 2008.  He had her CREMATED and he and Michele quickly threw her ashes out to sea.  I wonder why he didn't have her buried next to her husband?

Oh, I forgot the cremation thing. So why not inter her ashes next to her husband, anyway? Very strange.

Might have been in her will. IIRC, Obama's mother was also cremated and her ashes put into the sea (think it was at roughly the same spot, too).
