Further cementing Tennessee's reputation as a rock-solid Republican stronghold, Memphis Democrat Sara Kyle this week dropped her potential challenge against Gov. Bill Haslam.
Kyle, a former Tennessee Regulatory Authority commissioner, revealed Thursday that she won’t run for the Volunteer State's highest office this year, following a four-month flirtation with the idea, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
That leaves the state without any Democratic challenger to Haslam, the former mayor of Knoxville who was elected governor in 2010.
Other than the memory of Vice President Al Gore, Democrats have little to crow about in Tennessee politics.
Last year, Bob Corker won reelection to the U.S. Senate without a proper Democrat challenger.
Kyle, 61, revealed last August that she was mulling a run against Haslam, but never set up campaign or fundraising operations, the Commercial Appeal reported.
With the April deadline for filing petitions to become a candidate approaching, there are no challengers from any party taking on Haslam yet.
