Obamacare Website Failure Forces 18,000 West Virginians to Re-Enroll

by Wynton Hall 3 Jan 2014, 9:32 AM PDT

A new Obamacare website failure has forced 18,000 West Virginians to re-enroll for health coverage. The Charleston Gazette says HealthCare.gov's back end systems that are supposed to transfer account information to and from the state of West Virginia's system have failed.

Department of Health and Human Resources Assistant Secretary Jeremiah Samples says West Virginia is not the only state affected by the Obamacare failure.

"This really is a national problem," said Samples.

The 18,000 affected citizens will receive letters, emails, and automated phone messages telling them they must sign up for Obamacare all over again. West Virginians for Affordable Health Care Executive Director Peter Bryant worries the website failures may place individuals at risk of having gaps in their coverage.

"These people played by the rules and did everything right, and it was a computer glitch, a malfunction that created a gap in coverage. That should not occur," said Bryant.
