Magpul Industries, one of the largest gun manufacturers in the United States, formally announced Thursday it is relocating its operations to Wyoming and Texas. The company is fleeing the state of Colorado following the passage of new gun control laws that “dramatically” limit the sale of firearms accessories.
The company is relocating manufacturing, distribution and shipping operations to Cheyenne, Wyo., and moving its corporate headquarters to Texas, according to a press released provided to TheBlaze. Magpul is still considering three North Central Texas sites, but the transition will begin immediately after a final decision is made.“Magpul made the decision to relocate in March 2013 and has proceeded on an aggressive but deliberate path,” Doug Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Magpul Industries, said. “These dual moves will be carried out in a manner that ensures our operations and supply chain will not be interrupted and our loyal customers will not be affected.”
The corporate move to Texas is also being assisted by the support of Gov. Rick Perry and the Texas Economic Development Corporation. Perry has not been shy about luring gun companies dealing with new gun control laws to his state.
Magpul CEO Richard Fitzpatrick said the new locations were selected carefully. He says the company wanted to relocate to states that “support our culture of individual liberties and personal responsibility.”
Founded in 1999, Magpul reportedly employs 200 people and previously contributed roughly $85 million to Colorado’s economy. The company plans on initially relocating 92 percent of its current workforce outside of Colorado and will only maintain “limited operations” in the state.
Additionally, Colorado’s restrictive gun control laws have also cost two Democrats their jobs as residents voted to recall Democratic state Sens. John Morse and Angela Giron. State Sen. Evie Hudak (D) resigned earlier this year to avoid a similar recall election.
The new gun control laws prohibit the sale of magazines with more than 15 rounds and require background checks on gun transfers. The legislation was passed in a furious effort to impose tighter gun control following the tragic Sandy Hook shooting.
