Terri Schiavo's Family Joins Fight for Teen on Life Support
Wednesday, January 1, 2014 10:38 PM

By: Cathy Burke

A foundation started on behalf of Terri Schiavo, whose case sparked a national right-to-die debate, says it's been secretly helping the family of of a 13-year-old brain dead California girl fight to keep her on life support.

The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network said in a statement it's been involved in the case of Jahi McMath in "relative silence," as her family searched for a long-term care facility to care for her.

McMath's family says it found a facility in New York; doctors at Children's Hospital Oakland assert there's no hope for her recovery. She was declared brain dead after complications from a routine tonsillectomy Dec. 12.

"Together with our team of experts, Terri's Network believes Jahi's case is representative of a very deep problem within the U.S. healthcare system -- particularly those issues surrounding the deaths of patients within the confines of hospital corporations, which have a vested financial interest in discontinuing life," the foundation said.

Schiavo's case sparked a national debate in the '90s as doctors, lawyers and family members battled over whether to remove Schiavo's feeding tube. She died in 2005, nearly two weeks after doctors removed the device.

In the foundation statement about McMath, Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo's brother and executive director of the organization, noted: "Families and individuals must make themselves aware of what so-called 'brain death' is and what it is not. Every person needs to understand that medical accidents happen every day. Families and individuals must be more aware of the issue of accountability and patient rights."

On Tuesday, a judge extended Jahi's life support an hour before a federal court order keeping the hospital from unhooking her was set to expire. The deadline was extended to Jan. 7.

McMath family lawyer Christopher Dolan said Wednesday he's fighting for a tracheostomy for Jahi.

"However, many surgeons and hospital administrators are on holiday making our goal difficult to reach," he said in a statement posted on the foundations website.

"If Children's Hospital Oakland would perform the procedure we could quickly move Jahi to a facility that provides innovative world-class treatments, of the type being given to Prime Minister Sharon in Israel."

Dolan pleaded for a specialist to step forward "and give this mother the choice and this child a chance."

Children's Hospital Oakland declared last week it "does not believe that performing surgical procedures on the body of a deceased person is an appropriate medical practice," ABC News reported.

Omari Sealey, Jahi's uncle, said Wednesday the family still hopes to move her to another facility, CNN reported.

I'm as pro-life as can be, and I've pretty much had enough of Bobby Schindler. He's making a good living as CEO of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network, though.   :pondering:

Six doctors and the hospital have all declared her brain dead with no hope of 're-entry'.

Somebody should ask Kathleen Sabelius what SHE would do under Obamacare.

It's not the financial aspects of her care that concern me. If this child were not brain dead, I'd say "do whatever it takes." But she is.

I find it odd, that people who claim to believe in "life after death" are among those working so hard to prevent an innocent person, from going on to their next reward.

It is like they fight against God's will, while claiming themselves to be Godly people.

So in my opinion, they do not need machines to pump blood through the dead girl's body.

They need comfort, counseling, a kindly pastor, to help the family accept what has taken place, and move on with their lives.

Acceptance does not equal approval.

ditto  ...the hospital  were my mom worked had to get a court order  to take a braindead kid off a ventilator.. they had to take up  a whole  hallway because of  the smell  of decay  and then maggots ...make the family  pay  for wasting the hospitals time and resources and make them  pay all court costs as well as   the cleaning bill.... I have no sympathy for people who are  that  are  so ignorant that they use up hospital  resources, our tax dollars  and put the doctors and nurses though hell because they are too ignorant to accept death or hear what the doctors say

This is a steep, slippery slope that we are headed down.  It won't end well.  Healthcare rationing, then euthanasia by gov't decree.

There is a big difference in this girl and Terri Schiavo.  McMath has no brain function at all while Schiavo did.  McMath is kept functioning only by the machine keeping her heart and lungs working.  Schiavo was not kept alive by machines, only a feeding tube.  Her heart will stop within seconds of the machine being turned off.  That is not being alive.

I know if that were me I wouldn't have to worry I have a living will that says turn off the machines and I have a copy of it at my hospital and my son has another but this is a child and that is so hard for parents to accept. The fact this hospital may have helped kill their child makes it all the harder for the parents to trust the hospital or doctors and believe she is really gone. I understand their pain having lost a child myself and it took a long time for me to accept God needed him more than I did and I am glad I didn't have to make any decision like they are having to make concerning their child. I also don't think this case is the same as Terry Schiavo not in the least and shouldn't be compared to it.

I agree with Atomic Cow, There is a big difference in this girl and Terri Schiavo. and like Mountaineer, am as pro-life as can be. But this child of God is physically dead and the parents have to come to accept that. The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network is on the wrong side on this one.

This is exactly right.

If you think you are 'as pro-life as can be', yet still want to turn-off the machines before the parents are ready... you aren't that pro-life...

what the members of the supposed pro-life movement is a level of dignity.  one would end the life of a pet as it would be inhumane to let it live yet keep a human alive in a worse state, waitin' for that miracle.   if not a sparrow falls it would indicate there is no life above another.  we obviously expect the family to spend themselves into the poor house or toss the bill over to John Q. Public to pay for care. if she were just another ghetto rat people would screaming be cutting off her welfare.
Pro-life does NOT mean keeping the shell of a creature that used to be human at all costs.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

Is it simply internet-lore, or didn't a young lady who was declared brain-dead by a hospital and medical staff reawaken after a year or so?

So, we keep grandma on a ventilator for 6 years, lest anyone think we care more about her estate than her, while the hospital, doctors, attorneys, moppers, nutrition specialists, cadre of protesters (for and against whilst the Preachers milk their flock down to the last dime) drain her bank account to the last dusty penny and as mentioned previously, for the Almighty to awaken her on a whim.
No thanks.  My condolences to those who lost children, spouses or parents.  I was that person, in a hospital bed for 6 days, I'm presuming non-responsive because I couldn't remember a whole lot and forget more with each passing day.  Was my situation different?  Couldn't tell you, don't know what they lived/living through.  I will say this though, to my "perception" for lack of a better term, I think I felt prayer.  It was elevating, arising, I can't think of a word, in Roman Catholic terms, I was near the altar, a place of holiness.

Your situation was certainly different because technology told them you had 'normal' brain activity.

This young lady is....according to today's technology...dead and gone and requires a ventilator to assist in her breathing.

Correct.  There is a time when the family must accept and let go.

Wasn't what I said, now was it?  Of course not.  That's just how far you had to go to have a point.

So why don't you let them do that?

Good post.  There are spiritualists that would suggest the soul has already left her body and moved on to its reward in Heaven.

If that has indeed happened, her body will not last long.  If that has not happened, you would be killing her.

The urge to play God rears its ugly head so readily...

Actually depends on what your definition of "long" is.    You can keep flesh and bones hydrated indefinitely, can't you?

"Putting pets down" consists of actively and intentionally poisoning them to death. That is not analogous to what is going on here.
