Putin comes to Volgograd to hold anti-terrorist meeting

On Wednesday, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin came to the Russian city of Volgograd. The President is going to visit one of the city’s hospitals, where people who were injured in two terrorist acts that recently took place in Volgograd are now undergoing medical treatment. Later, Mr. Putin will hold a meeting devoted to fighting against terrorism.
 
The first terrorist act took place on Sunday, when a suicide bomber exploded himself at the entry to the local railway station.

Another explosion took place in a trolleybus in the rush hour on Monday morning.

In total, 34 people were killed and about 70 wounded as a result of both terrorist acts.

Putin warns 'terrorists' will face total destruction

President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday warned "terrorists" they face total destruction, after Russia was hit by double suicide bombings in its southern city of Volgograd that claimed 34 lives.

"Dear friends, we bow our heads in front of the victims of the terrible acts of terror. I am sure we will toughly and consistently continue to fight against terrorists until their total destruction", he said.

Putin made the comments in a New Year's address from the Far Eastern Russian city of Khabarovsk, which is seven hours ahead of Moscow and where he met with victims of devastating summer floods.

"In the current year, we have encountered problems and have been challenged by serious experiences, including ones like the inhuman acts of terror in Volgograd," Putin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Death toll from two terrorist attacks in Volgograd rises to 34 - Russia's Health Ministry

After the terrorist attacks in Volgograd, in the south of Russia, the death toll has risen to 34, an official with the regional department of Russia’s health Ministry said. The combined fatalaties from the city's two bombings has climbed to 34, the region’s Health Ministry spokesperson told the media on Tuesday.

"The train station blast killed 18 people and a further 16 died in the trolleybus explosion, according to new data," the spokesman said.

Previous reports put the trolleybus blast death toll at 15, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on the ground that hundreds of red roses, carnations and burning candles have been brought by mourners to the site of the terrorist attack.

The mourning in Volgograd will last till January 3.

In the meantime, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned the Volgograd bombings in his New Year's speech.

"Last year we had to deal with problems and serious challenges, including inhumane terrorist acts in Volgograd and an unprecedented flood in the Far East" Putin said, addressing Russians from the city of Khabarovsk which suffered most from September floods which displaced more than 7,000 people and ruined more than 12,000 homes.

In his speech the President also noted that in days of hardship "Russia has always become unified and cohesive".

"We bow our heads for the victims of the brutal terrorist attacks in Volgograd", Putin continued. "I am confident that we will continue to fight against the terrorists until their total anihilation".

Volgograd in mourning: First funerals of terrorist attack victims to be held on Dec 31

The first funerals of those killed in a suicide bombing attack at the Volgograd railway terminal will be held in the region on Tuesday. The government of the Volgograd region reported that "this decision has been taken by the relatives".

On Tuesday, the funerals of two victims of the attack will be held - Russian Railways (RZD) employee, Sergei Nalivaiko, born in 1984, will be buried in the Kirov district of Volgograd. He worked at the railway terminal, responsible for the inspection of hand baggage of passengers. Sergei was killed in the line of duty. On the same day, December 31, Leonid Sushchev, born 1986, will be buried at the Golubinsky state farm in the Kalachevski district of the Volgograd region.

On the following day - January 1, in the Krasnooktyabrsky district of Volgograd, relatives will hold the funerals of Denis Andreyev, born 1989. He too an RZD employee, like his colleague Sergei Nalivaiko, inspecting hand baggage, and died in the line of duty. On the same day, January 1, Yelena Nikulina, 1992, who was killed in the suicide bombing at the terminal, will be buried in the Kumylzhenskaya village of the Volgograd region.

On Thursday, January 2, the funerals of Olga Tyunyaeva, born 1982, will be held at the Krasnooktyabrsky district of Volgograd. Transport police Senior Sergeant Dmitry Makovkin, born 1984, will be buried on the same day at the Dimitrovskoye Cemetery of the Dzerzhinsky district. Dmitry was killed in the line of duty.

The regional government is engaged in the organisation of the funerals - the region’s leadership has assumed all the costs associated with the burial and wake ceremonies. Material assistance is provided to all the families of those killed, regardless of where the victims lived.

Relatives of those killed in the terrorist attack at the railway terminal continue to arrive in Volgograd. Many who perished come from other regions of Russia, among the victims there are also citizens of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries. The government of the Volgograd region has prepared hotel rooms for the families of the terrorist victims. The regional authorities will pay for their accommodation in full.

Volgograd terrorist acts death toll grows to 33

Chief Directorate of the Russian Emergency Ministry for the Volgograd Region reports that the number of victims of two terrorist acts in Volgograd has grown to 33. Earlier it was reported that 17 people died as a result of an explosion at the railway station and 14 people during the terrorist act in a trolleybus.

The message on the Chief Directorate’s website reads that 106 people suffered as a result of two terrorist acts on 29 and 30 December, 33 of them died and 65 are in hospital with various injuries.

The Chief Directorate specifies in its release that 18 people died after the explosion at the railway station on Sunday and 15 people in the trolleybus on Monday.

All Volgograd victims identified

Olga Makarova from the Centre of Emergency Psychological Aid (CEPA) of the Russian Emergency Ministry reported that all those who died as a result of two terrorist acts in Volgograd have been identified. She specified that CEPA experts provided psychological follow-up of the identification process. They are also serving the hot line and working in hospitals with the victims and their families.

Two explosions that occurred at the Volgograd railway station and in a trolley-bus in one of the city districts within 24 hours claimed over 30 lives. Updated lists of the casualties were posted on the regional government’s website on Monday night.
All those who died as a result of an explosion at the Volgograd railway station were identified on Sunday night. Seventeen people became victims of that terrorist act, among them two children born on 2001 and 2002.
