MOSCOW (AP) — At least 10 people were killed and three were wounded Sunday by an explosion at a railway station in southern Russia, officials said, heightening concern about terrorism ahead of February's Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Russia's Interior Ministry said the explosion hit the central railway station the city of Volgograd. It gave no immediate details.

Provinces in southern Russia have been destabilized by attacks linked to Islamic rebels.

In October, a female suicide bomber blew herself up on a city bus in Volgograd, killing six people and injuring about 30. Officials said the attacker came from the province of Dagestan, which has become the center of an Islamist insurgency that has spread across the region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, but it came several months after Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov called for attacks on the Sochi Games.

On Friday, three people died in the city of Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus Mountains when a car rigged with explosives blew up on a street in Pyatigorsk, the central of a federal administrative district intended to stabilize the North Caucasus region.

yep.  And the Russians are not at all concerned about "collateral damage" either.  Recall them flooding the theater with enough fentanol anesthetic gas to kill just about everyone in that building, hostages, terrorists and all.

Which I think is great. Take them out swiftly. I remember seeing a photo of after they flooded that theater with gas.  One of the dead bodies had a bomb vest on with a trigger in their hand still.

And here we are again this morning with a suicide attack straight out of Arafat's PLO handbook.  If you recall, bombing crowded buses was a favorite tactic back in the day and that's what drove Israel to build the wall.

For the record, these are muslim extremists who want to carve out an Islamic State, ruled by Sharia, out of a large chunk of Russian territory.  These kinds of bombings are more common that people realize, they just don't usually take place in such a public manner or in a City as large as Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad).  Volgograd is a major transportation hub in that part of Russia which may be what is driving these two (so far) suicide attacks.

It's only just beginning. They are using Syria as a training ground - it's pretty well known there that many of the more psychotic militant fighters are Kazaks or Uzbecks. As you know, the best way to train for a war is to actually fight in one. It weeds out the incompetent and leaves the rest with actual combat experience.

Main reason Russia is backing Assad, but slowly in terms of weapons. The fight drains more of the Jihadis away from Russia and they have a higher chance of being killed.
