On December 27th Connecticut Police released thousands of pages of documents on Adam Lanza and his heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary. Among the revelations is that in 5th grade, Lanza wrote a story in which one of the main characters "talks of liking to hurt people, especially children."

According to the Associated Press (AP), the documents show that Lanza "was undoubtedly afflicted with mental problems." He was diagnosed with Asperger's disorder in 2005. This is "an autism-like condition that is not associated with violence."

Yet either because of the disorder or for other, unknown reasons, Lanza "lacked empathy for others and behaved strangely."

The report indicates he "wouldn't touch doorknobs, his food had to be arranged on the plate in a certain way, and he changed clothes often during the day. He was a loner at school and was repelled by crowds and noises." Lanza apparently disliked birthdays, Christmas, and holidays; he had other quirks, among them a dislike for getting his hair cut.

Most tellingly, the report affirms that Lanza was fascinated with mass shootings and firearms. He was particularly "obsessed" with the heinous crime at Columbine High School that took place in 1999.

However, the report maintains Lanza displayed "no aggressive or threatening tendencies" prior to December 14, 2012.

In 5th grade he wrote a story titled, "The Big Book of Granny." In it, granny has "a gun in her cane and shoots people." One of the other main characters "talks of liking to hurt people, especially children."

Adam Lanza was clearly not some radically unexpected, bolt-from-the-blue, killer.

Studied ignorance by the schools can be controlled.  And children who demonstrate an authentic risk can be evaluated.

... Other pictures showed the killer’s arsenal of guns and exotic knives, including three samurai swords.

The weapon he used to kill his mother in her sleep was found on the master-bedroom floor alongside a book titled “Train Your Brain to Get Happy.”

One of Lanza’s former teachers told investigators that Adam exhibited antisocial behavior, rarely interacted with other students and obsessed in writings “about battles, destruction and war.”

“In all my years of experience, I have known (redacted) grade boys to talk about things like this, but Adam’s level of violence was disturbing,” the teacher said. “Adam’s creative writing was so graphic that it could not be shared.”

The report says Lanza was diagnosed with autism in 2006 and that he constantly washed his hands and changed his socks up to 20 times a day.

Lanza’s mother declined to give him antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication because she thought it made it difficult for him to raise his arm.

And about two weeks before the massacre, Nancy Lanza told a friend that Adam was increasingly despondent and that he had gone “over the edge” when their house lost power during Hurricane Sandy. ...

This report just reinforces my view, that had Nancy Lanza not been the first victim of her deranged spawn, she would likely have been charged as an accessory to the murder of every one of those children and their teachers.  The last thing you treat mental illness with is firearms.
