Liberal Commercial Talk Radio Disappears in NY, LA, SF in 2014

2014 will mark the beginning of a massive change for liberal talk radio across the country. In New York, WWRL 1600 AM will flip to Spanish-language music and talk, throwing Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Alan Colmes off the air. In Los Angeles, KTLK 1150 will be dumping Stephanie Miller, Rhodes, Bill Press and David Cruz off the air in favor of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. In San Francisco, KNEW 960 will leave Miller, Hartmann, and Mike Malloy without a radio home in the market.

Thanks to radio consolidation and the secondary status of leftist talk in major markets across the country, the final death knell for liberal talkers could be tolling. Leftist talkers simply don’t have the same radio draw as conservatives; KTLK was ranked #41 in the market in November 2013, with WWRL registering almost no pulse at all. KNEW registered just an 0.4 in the San Francisco market in December 2013, placing it #31 in the market.

The failure of commercial leftist talk means that only government-sponsored NPR remains in many major markets.

An interesting development in Pittsburgh: a few weeks ago, local conservative talk hosts Quinn and Rose were told by their station (a ClearChannel station whose vice president happens to be Tom Daschle's son) about 10 minutes before air time that they no longer worked there. The story is that they had been negotiating a new contract, but WPGB must have decided it wouldn't happen and so told them to get out. In their place WPGB is running a local talk show out of Wheeling, WV with a fairly liberal host. Can't wait to see what the ratings are. Why would Q&R's audience in Pittsburgh want to hear a guy who's liberal politically and spends most of the time talking about  high school sports in WV and OH?

This is a rare instance of solid conservative radio hosts getting axed, but I'm hoping they'll land somewhere.

mountaineer, I wonder the same thing. Q&R was popular enough to be syndicated in my neck of the woods and was also on satellite. They would have had a real chance at the big time if they had landed on WOR.

Instead, CC chose Elliot Segal, one of the filthiest shock jocks on radio today. Q&R have been fired. John Gambling was forced out after 88 years.

Couple that with CC's refusal to clear Glenn Beck in NYC and the relegation of its star properties to weaker stations and you have to wonder if CC is killing off its conservative talk properties on purpose.

Hardly looks like CC is dumping conservatives.  FYI Limbo is leaving KFI in Los Angeles, and while the overall schedule is fairly mainstream, Limbo was the ONLY true conservative.

KFI is a huge station, and with Limbo KTLK will become another bigger station.

It may be that it only was the Pittsburgh ClearChannel station who dumped the conservatives because Daschle's son forced the issue. You can bet their ratings will go in the crapper now from 6 a.m. - 10 a.m.
