Church Displays Bleeding Trayvon Martin Nativity Scene

Quote
Outside the Claremont United Methodist Church is a nativity scene with a bleeding Trayvon Martin.  The California Church has turned their nativity scene "into a piece of art that comments on our times" for the last seven years.

John Zachary, the artist, told me the acquittal in July of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot the 17-year-old African-American in 2012, struck him as a worthy subject for Christmas comment.

For one thing, the backdrop to the Christmas story is the slaughter by King Herod of all infants in Bethlehem, a barbarous attempt to kill the Messiah.

Zachary described that when looking for pictures of Trayvon "one of the teenager lying dead on the pavement particularly tore at him. 'What if Jesus was lying there bleeding to death? I was kind of thinking of that,' Zachary said."

The title of the nativity "art" is called " 'A Child is Born, a Son is Given,' the wording outlined in red formed from a pool of blood at Trayvon’s feet."

The Church's pastor, Sharon Rhodes-Wickett, said the scene was hard to to look at.

"I found this year’s hard to look at. It’s hard to look at a young man who’s shot and bleeding to death. But even though I’m uncomfortable with it, that’s the point," Rhodes-Wickett said. "We have to take a look at the violence."

Response to the display has been "muted."

It seems to me a scene with Obama crapping on America would have been more appropriate. :tongue2:

When I read the headline, I knew right away that White Liberals would be behind it.

Don't like it.

But truth_seeker is right. It is free speech.

It is Free Speech.

Yes it is.  We all have to deal with things we don't like to enjoy the things we do.  But.... If you don't want religion in politics, don't put politics in religion.

It's a political statement in what is conventionally one of faith.

Exactly, and it makes this member of the public think the artist is an idiot.

Because of Rachel Jeantel's interview on CNN where she said, in no uncertain terms, that Trayvon jumped Zimmerman because he thought he was gay, I believe we can also assume that the artist is a homophobe in celebrating someone who thinks it is OK to 'jump' a gay person.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You will never see Black people doing this stupid crap. Black people know what is going on. They know exactly who and what Trayvon was. This is all being driven by stupid White Liberals who don't have a clue. Crap like this does not help the Black community, like stupid White Liberals think, it hurts.

I was on a ship, deployed, talking to a Black guy about Farrakhan (Farrakhan had just said something crazy about killing all White people). This guy looked at me in disbelief and said, Hey!, don't worry. Farrakhan is much more likely to kill me, or get me killed, than he will ever do to you. Trayvon was much more likely to kill, rape, or rob, his fellow Black neighbors than he would White or Latino.

Black people know what is going on. It is the idiot race baiting Whites, who think they are sooooo...enlightened, (cough...cough..Chrissy 'tingles' Matthews) who keep the pot stirred.

Since this church is obviously making a political statement, shouldn't lose their 501 3 c status because free speech in a church getting tax breaks is limited to statements other than political. :pondering:

It is Free Speech.

It is Free Speech as exercised by an abject moron, outside a Church possibly filled with abject morons.

You may see the death of Trayvon Martin as "political" but many do not.

The scene doesn't say: vote for democrats, or for a specific candidate, and therefore is NOT political in the sense used to determine 501 C 3 status.

Morons also have the right to free speech. Just ask the White House or Ms. Pelosi or Ms. Wasserman-Shultz.  :tongue2:

As long as it was not paid for with public funds - what's the harm?

Trayvon Martin was a lie.
Matthew Sheppard was a lie.
Sandra Fluke was a lie.

Yet they worked.  What is the moral?
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

Great question, Cincinnatus.

But obviously, the brutal deaths of millions of babies (including more than their share of African-American babies) is of no concern to the left.

Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

Use the time God is giving us to seek His will and feel His presence.
