A 72 hour bugout bag always makes sense. What's in yours depends on your personal circumstances.

Two additional points, from a pragmatic point of view.

1/ Get certified copies of your important documentation and keep them in a plastic pouch where you can grab them quickly. Drivers license, Birth certificates, immunization records, social security number, notarized photocopies of your passport. Anything that can be used to identify you as actually being you. Don't keep them in the bag, but keep them where you can grab them in the dark on the way out of the door.

2/ Keep your gas tank filled. Don't run it down to almost empty, top it up after you have used a 1/4 tank.

And a final, from several years of driving tired and scared and waiting to be ambushed - always have candies in the car. You need the sugar rush. It calms down any kids you have with you. Keeps you alert.
