Pass it.  Don't let the Democrats distract away from Obamacare.

Republicans are letting themselves get painted as mean, what with the  Veteran Pension cuts and refusal to extend Unemployment Insurance while restoring all kinds of money to Defense Contractors.

They always do this and end up getting the hell beat out of them before extending it anyway.

No, it doesn't make sense for them to keep extending unemployment benefits time after time and then say the economy is in recovery. They want it both ways and nothing will be able to shift the focus off of Obamacare.

The Democrats are why the economy - and the employment situation - are down the crapper. Now they will benefit from their own mess?

The Republicans will give in on this, as they always do.  May as well do it now instead of getting trashed for two months.

Yes, the press can take the focus off Obamacare.  We can't let them.

Absolutely 100% agree in this instance.  First, extending unemployment benefits is not entirely a waste of money since most of the recipients have worked to pay the taxes that fund those benefits, so we're not talking about real welfare moochers.  Second, as sinkspur points out, denying the democrats these optics in this election year is too important.  And instead of looking like they're being dragged kicking and screaming on this one - the way the optics ended up working out on the shutdown - the republicans should find some relatively neutral expenditures that can be cut and/or deferred, and ask for those in exchange for agreeing to extend the unemployment benefits.

Think of it this way:  the GOP would get a relatively inexpensive chance to get some practice on the art of strategic compromise, something that Reagan had in abundance and the current GOP not at all, while at the same time denying the democrats a very big stick they could beat the republicans with the length and breadth of 2014 up until Nov. 4.

That's why the republicans should deny them that chance by agreeing to an extension without too much of a fight - there has to be something of a fight or the demoncrats will suspect something - which would suck the oxygen out of the room on this one.

Limbaugh will weigh in, per usual and detonate the whole thing.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.
