A new study from Britain’s BMJ medical journal found that one percent of women who’ve become pregnant in the U.S. claim to be virgins. It’s a miracle! Not the claimed virgin births, but that these women made it to child-bearing age without learning about the birds and the bees.As The Star reports, “Based on interviews with 7,870 women and girls ages 15-28, 45 of the 5,340 pregnancies in this group through the years — 0.8 per cent — occurred in women who reported that they conceived independent of men.” The study didn’t include woman who’d had in vitro fertilization or other assisted pregnancies, so that means that these women believe they’re all bona fide Pure Prudences.More of these claimed virgin births occur in women who are pregnant around the holidays and most of the babies are male, though the data in the study isn’t statistically significant. Still, it begs the question of why so many women believe they could be harboring Baby Jesus’s illegitimate siblings over on the virgin birth circuit.According to the report, many of these virgin pregnancies occurred in women who’d taken pledges of chastity — coming in at 31 percent, more than twice the percentage of the women who hadn’t taken such pledges. Apparently, God favors giving kids to people who’ve vowed not to do anything that would give them kids. These pregnancies were more likely to occur in women whose families rarely talked about sex and who were less likely to know how to use condoms.
