Colorado school shooting injures 2; gunman reported dead
4:45 PM 12/13/2013

A student opened fire at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., Friday, wounding two people before taking his own life.

The victims, who are also students, were taken to area hospitals. One is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound. The other is reported to have minor gunshot injuries and is expected to be released from the hospital Friday evening.

According to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson, a student with a shotgun entered the school at 12:33 p.m. looking for a specific teacher, who was notified and left the building.

Robinson praised the teacher’s decision to leave the school in an effort to have the shooter follow him, calling it “the most important tactical decision that could be made.”

Authorities did not name the teacher or the shooter, citing the ongoing investigation.

When gunshots rang out, the school went into “active-shooter lockdown” and students hid in classrooms before being evacuated. Robinson said the protocol for responding officers during such a lockdown is to “go to the threat and try to eliminate the threat.” Multiple news outlets reported an overwhelming police response within minutes of a 9-1-1 call that was made shortly before 12:40 p.m., including a bomb squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Within an hour of the shooting, local police commanders said there was no longer an imminent threat at the school.

“We are slowly and methodically clearing the school to make sure the students are safe,” Sheriff Grayson Robinson told the media at during an earlier briefing. “No weapons were found other than the one that was used in the shooting.”

Gov. John Hickenlooper praised the police response in the face of “unspeakable horror in a place of learning.”

The shooting comes just a day before the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in which 26 people, including 20 first-graders, were killed.

Teenager Who Opened Fire at High School Identified, May Have Had Grudge Against Teacher
Dec. 13, 2013 11:07pm

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — A teenager who may have had a grudge against a teacher opened fire Friday with a shotgun at a suburban Denver high school, wounding a fellow student before killing himself.

Quick-thinking students alerted the targeted teacher, who quickly left the building. The scene unfolded on the eve of the Newtown massacre anniversary, a somber reminder of the ever-present potential for violence in the nation’s schools.

The wounded student, a 15-year-old girl, underwent surgery and was in critical condition. Authorities originally said a second student was wounded, but Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said Friday night that the other girl taken to a hospital was covered in blood from the other student, but wasn’t injured.

A sheriff deputy talks on his radio at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, where a student shot at least one other student at a Colorado high school Friday before he apparently killed himself, authorities said. The shooter entered Arapahoe High School in a Denver suburb armed with a shotgun and looking for a teacher he identified by name, said Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson.

Robinson identified the shooter as Karl Halverson Pierson, 18. The sheriff did not elaborate on any possible motive except to say Pierson had had a “confrontation or disagreement” with the teacher.

Pierson made no attempt to hide his weapon after entering the school from a parking lot and asking for the teacher by name, Robinson said.

When the teacher learned that he was being targeted, he left “in an effort to try to encourage the shooter to also leave the school,” the sheriff said. “That was a very wise tactical decision.”

Jessica Girard was in math class when she heard three shots.

“Then there was a bunch of yelling, and then I think one of the people who had been shot was yelling in the hallway ‘Make it stop,’” she said.

Two suspected Molotov cocktails were also found inside the school, the sheriff said. One detonated, though no one was injured.

The school was swiftly locked down. Within 20 minutes of the first report of a gunman, officers found Pierson’s body inside the school, Robinson said.

Several other Denver-area school districts went into lockdown as reports of the shooting spread. Police as far away as Fort Collins, about a two-hour drive north, stepped up school security.

Arapahoe High students were seen walking toward the school’s running track with their hands in the air, and television footage showed students being patted down. Robinson said deputies wanted to make sure there were no other conspirators. Authorities later concluded that Pierson had acted alone.

Nearby neighborhoods were jammed with cars as parents sought out their children. Some parents stood in long lines at a church. One young girl who was barefoot embraced her parents, and the family began to cry.

The shooting came a day before the anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., attack in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Arapahoe High stands just 8 miles east of Columbine High School in Littleton, where two teenage shooters killed 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves in 1999. The practice of sending law enforcement directly into an active shooting, as was done Friday, was a tactic that developed in response to the Columbine shooting.

Since Columbine, Colorado has endured other mass shootings, including the killing of 12 people in a movie theater in nearby Aurora in 2012. But it was not until after the Newtown massacre that state lawmakers moved to enact stricter gun control laws. Two Democratic lawmakers were recalled from office earlier this year for backing the laws, and a third recently resigned to avoid a recall election.

The district attorney prosecuting the theater shooting, George Brauchler, lives near Arapahoe High. At a news conference, he urged anyone who needed help to call a counseling service and gave out a phone number.

Tracy Monroe, who had step-siblings who attended Columbine, was standing outside the school on Friday looking at her phone, reading text messages from her 15-year-old daughter inside.

Monroe said she got the first text from her daughter, sophomore Jade Stanton, at 12:41 p.m. The text read, “There’s sirens. It’s real. I love you.”

A few minutes later, Jade texted “shots were fired in our school.” Monroe rushed to the school and was relieved when Jade texted that a police officer entered her classroom and she was safe.

Monroe was family friends with a teacher killed in the Columbine shooting, Dave Sanders.

“We didn’t think it could happen in Colorado then, either,” Monroe said.

After hearing three shots, freshman Colton Powers said, everyone “ran to the corner of the room and turned off the lights and locked the door and just waited, hoped for the best. A lot of people I couldn’t see, but they were crying. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do.”

His mother, Shelly Powers, said she first got word of the shooting in the middle of a conference call at work.

“I dropped all my devices, got my keys and got in my car,” she said. “I was crying all the way here.”

More than 2,100 students attend Arapahoe High, where nine out of 10 graduates go on to college, according to the Littleton Public Schools website.

Gunman kills self at Colorado high school; second student critically wounded

Karl Halverson Pierson
By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A quick-thinking teacher may have saved other lives Friday by trying to lure a student brandishing a shotgun away from teenagers at a Colorado high school, where the gunman wounded a fellow student before killing himself, authorities said.

The injured student, a 15-year-old girl, was critically wounded and was in surgery after the gunman shot her at Arapahoe High School in Centennial. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said initial reports that the student confronted the gunman turned out not to be true.

A second student initially believed to have been wounded turned out only to have been splattered with some of the girl's blood, Robinson said at a news briefing late Friday.

The shooter, identified as Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, a student at the school, appeared to be seeking revenge against a specific teacher after an earlier confrontation, Robinson said. He said Pierson was looking for the teacher by name when the incident began about 12:33 p.m. (2:33 p.m. ET).

The teacher hasn't been officially identified.

"The teacher exited the school immediately, which was, in my opinion, the most important tactical decision that could have been made," Robinson said. "I believe it was a wise tactical decision to remove himself from the school so maybe the threat went toward him rather than the school."

An army of officers responded, having dramatically changed their standing orders after the deaths of 12 students and a teacher 14 years ago at Columbine High School — just about 10 miles away. Instead of waiting for backup, they rushed in immediately.

They found Pierson in a classroom about 20 minutes after they began their search, Robinson said. He said investigators knew his identity and were talking to his family, even as his body remained inside the school Friday night.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson identifies the teenager who shot a fellow student at Arapahoe High School before killing himself.

Robinson said two devices similar to Molotov cocktails were also found in the building, one of which created a cloud of smoke and the other of which was disarmed. As darkness fell, SWAT officers with dogs were still at the school.

Meanwhile, police, sheriff's deputies and agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives barreled into a home about 4 miles from the school. No one appeared to be home, a neighbor said.

"An ATF agent said we should stay in the house," she told NBC station KUSA of Denver. "I didn't ask any questions."

Robinson said late Friday that authorities were investigating four locations:  the school, Pierson's car, his mother's home and his father's home. His parents divorced in 2011.

A janitor first spotted the gunman and alerted authorities. The man, who said he wanted to be identified only as Fabian, said the gunman was running side to side, kind of military style."

"I looked to see if there was a gun," Fabian told KUSA. "It was a shotgun."

"When he went into the library, he said, 'Where is Murphy?'" Fabian said.

Robinson confirmed that the gunman was armed with a shotgun.

Students described a scene of terror when the shooting started.

"I heard three shots, and then the school went into lockdown," Camden Flinders, 14, a freshman, told NBC News. "I saw the blood in the study center and in the gym. We could see blood on the floor. ...

"We went on lockdown for about 20 to 30 minutes. There was big line of police and blood splatters by the gym and the study center," he said.

Parents were being asked to gather at nearby schools and churches, the sheriff's office said. They dropped whatever they were doing to rush to the scene — one was seen in full medical scrubs, as though he had just raced out of a doctor's office, KUSA reported.

An Arapahoe High School student tells NBC station KUSA she texted her parents a message she never wanted to have to send them.

Camden's father, Marcus Flinders, was working at an area Latter-day Saints temple when he got the news from a fellow congregant.

"I broke down. I thought my son was one of the ones who was injured," he said. "I was pretty much crying. It was really traumatic."

'A traumatic situation'

Authorities said that while they had no indication of a second shooter, they proceeded as though there might have been one as a matter of caution. Students were led out of the building with their arms in the air, some of them being patted down by police.

"The kids have been through a traumatic situation," Robinson said. "We need to ensure that anyone we evacuate isn't part of our problem. We're doing the evacuation slowly and deliberately."

President Barack Obama was briefed about the shooting, White House officials said.

Arapahoe High School, with 2,000 students, is an affluent suburb of Denver in the same county where James Eagan Holmes is accused of having killed 12 people in a movie theater in the town of Aurora last year.

Asked whether the shooting might have some connection to Saturday's anniversary of the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Robinson replied simply, "No."

At least they reported this was a shotgun and didn't go off on the usual automatic weapon tangent....

Colorado school gunman seen as bright and passionate about politics

Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, wounded a student Friday at a Colorado high school before shooting himself, authorities said.
By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The 18-year-old gunman who wounded a fellow student at a Colorado school before taking his own life Friday was described as a bright, politically opinionated young man who had a beef with a teacher.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson identified the gunman as Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, a senior at Arapahoe High School in Centennial. Authorities said he entered the school about 12:33 p.m. (2:33 p.m. ET) looking for a specific teacher with whom he'd had an earlier confrontation.

"'Revenge' is the word that I chose," Robinson told reporters. "This is where our initial investigation is taking us. We know that there was some controversy between the student suspect and the teacher."

The teacher, alerted to the threat, immediately tried to lure Pierson away from other students by leaving the building, Robinson said.

"It was very tactical for the teacher, for him to remove himself from the school," Robinson said.

Pierson shot a 15-year-old girl before using the same shotgun to kill himself, Robinson said. The girl, who wasn't identified, was in critical condition Friday night, Littleton Adventist Hospital said.

Madison Berry, a senior at the school, said she had taken classes with Pierson.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson identifies the teenager who shot a fellow student at Arapahoe High School before killing himself.

"He was very outspoken — always involved with class discussion," she said. "So it was kind of odd to see that he was the one who did this."

Abbey Skoda, a junior, told The Denver Post: "He had very strong beliefs about gun laws and stuff. I also heard he was bullied a lot."

Neighbors said Pierson was a nice, quiet teen who lived with a nice, quiet family in a nice, quiet neighborhood.

"They were one of the first (families) to introduce themselves when we moved into the neighborhood" about five years ago, Jo VanDeWege, a neighbor, told NBC station KUSA of Denver.

Pierson "introduced himself and his sister, and they were all very sweet and seemed very cheerful. So this has been quite upsetting," she said.

Diane Shea, a neighbor, agreed, telling the Post,  "They're just a normal middle-class family, like many of the families around here."

Pierson's parents divorced in 2011, and he was believed to have lived with his mother, Robinson said late Friday. Authorities were investigating four locations: the school, Pierson's car, his mother's home and his father's home, he said.

Pierson's mother, a school system employee, was out of town caring for a sick relative, neighbors and investigators said.

L.A. Times
CENTENNIAL, Colo.—An 18-year-old high school student reportedly frustrated when he was ejected from the school debate club has been identified as the shooter who opened fire at a suburban Colorado high school Friday, wounding another student before killing himself.

Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, was said to be angry at the school debate coach and entered the school shortly after noon Friday with a shotgun, repeatedly calling the teacher’s name, according to interviews with students and law enforcement officials.

When he found the teacher, he “shot once and missed” before the teacher fled, according to senior Frank Woronoff, 18, who talked with the instructor—who seemed shell-shocked afterward—outside the school as students fled for safety.

“He could barely speak. All he could say were the same statements over and over. He seemed like he might have a panic attack,” Woronoff said of the teacher, whose name has not been released by authorities. ...

Friends described Pierson as an intelligent, likeable youth who liked to talk about politics and was a strong advocate of gun rights, though they said they had never seen him with a gun. ...

Pierson appeared to care passionately about debate, and became upset over a disagreement with the debate coach, friends said.

Joe Redmond, also a fellow senior and one of three co-captains of the debate team, said Pierson was kicked off the team and suspended from school in September for a few weeks after threatening the coach.

“When he came back he was really, really angry,” Redmond said.

The debate team won first place in a tournament Saturday, Redmond said, and when students returned to school Monday, Redmond asked Pierson if he would consider rejoining the team.

Pierson told Redmond that he still hated the teacher, and said, “Apparently you get suspended for threatening to kill a teacher.” He said Pierson went cold at that point, looked at Redmond, and then looked at the ground.

Redmond said that Pierson and the teacher had argued over changes Pierson had wanted to make to the debate team.

“He doesn’t take a no very lightly,” Redmond said.

Redmond said his team's victory on Saturday may have made Pierson upset that he was no longer on the team. He said Pierson was the best debater on the team.

Redmond said Pierson also seemed to be affected by the divorce of his parents within the last two years. ...

Pierson was also a member of the Facebook group Smart Sundays, which according to the page is “for people who want to partake in discussions of politics, philosophy, religion and things of that nature.”

On May 28, he posted a question to spark debate in the group: “I know it's not Sunday, but I was wondering to all the neoclassicals and neoliberals, why isn't the market correcting itself? If the invisible hand is so strong, shouldn't it be able to overpower regulations?”  ...

Gay rights supporter, eh? Will we hear that from the MSM?

Daily Mail
Quote
... Tracy Murphy worked as the librarian at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado but it was his role as the adult adviser for the speech and debate team that led to him being the target of gunman Karl Pierson's rage.

Mr Murphy allegedly demoted Pierson or kicked him off the team earlier this week.
Pierson's friend and fellow debate team member has said that he was upset about being demoted and his anger resulted in an even more serious suspension from the team.

‘Karl half-jokingly threatened to kill Mr Murphy, and Mr Murphy got him suspended for saying that,’ Pierson’s friend and teammate Joe Redmond told The New York Daily News.

‘Karl wanted to go to the Air Force Academy and they don’t look positively on suspensions so (Karl) felt like Mr Murphy had ruined his life.’ ...

Classmates have revealed that Pierson was politically active and spoke about gun laws during class.

‘He had very strong beliefs about gun laws and stuff,’ fellow student Abbey Skoda told The Denver Post hours after the Friday shooting.

The two groups that Pierson belonged to on Facebook suggests that he enjoyed political discourse, as one is for the members of the Speech and Debate club and the other is called Smart Sundays, where participants pose questions for spontaneous virtual conversation.

Pierson’s question to the group was directed towards neoclassicals and neoliberals, asking why the market hadn’t corrected itself in the wake of the recession. He later identified himself as a supporter of Keynesian economic theory.

In other posts, he touted his support for gay rights and made fun of Republicans but then also wrote on Facebook that he did not believe that President Obama did not deserve a second term in office.

His friends and fellow seniors Carl Schmidt and Brendon Mendelson told The Post that his political views were ‘outside the mainstream’. ...

... Even before authorities named the gunman, friends and neighbors were in shock as word spread that Pierson was a dedicated, bright student from a religious family that attends Bible study meetings.  ...

In one Facebook post, Pierson attacks the philosophies of economist Adam Smith, who through his invisible-hand theory pushed the notion that the free market was self-regulating. In another post, he describes himself as "Keynesian."

"I was wondering to all the neoclassicals and neoliberals, why isn't the market correcting itself?" he wrote. "If the invisible hand is so strong, shouldn't it be able to overpower regulations?"

Pierson also appears to mock Republicans on another Facebook post, writing "you republicans are so cute" and posting an image that reads: "The Republican Party: Health Care: Let 'em Die, Climate Change: Let 'em Die, Gun Violence: Let 'em Die, Women's Rights: Let 'em Die, More War: Let 'em Die. Is this really the side you want to be on?"

Carl Schmidt and Brendon Mendelson, both seniors at Arapahoe High, knew Pierson. They said he had political views that were "outside the mainstream," but they did not elaborate.

Schmidt said the shooter "was an outspoken kid about what he believed and a good political thinker." ...
