PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Tuesday he will house about 150 military veteran inmates under one roof in a segregated section of the Towers Jail facility.

The new military veterans housing unit will feature patriotic décor.

Arpaio explained he's doing it to provide them with extra assistance they may need arising from their time in the armed forces.

"They fight for us overseas, so, we must fight for them here," Arpaio said. "When their duty is done, ours has just begun."

Some of the programs the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office plan to offer the veterans include behavioral programming associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, job training and housing assistance services.

There is an extensive range of charges for the military veteran-inmates in the jail system.  They include probation violations, aggravated DUI, shoplifting, narcotics, burglary and aggravated assault.

Arpaio said he will hold a news conference Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Towers Jail to formally announce the initiative.
