Netflix to air Romney documentary

Posted By Faith Braverman On 1:13 PM 12/10/2013

Documentary film maker Greg Whitely is about to give Netflix viewers unprecedented access to the Romney family during the course of Mitt Romney’s two presidential campaigns beginning in 2006, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

As well as premiering on Netflix in January, “Mitt” is set to be a part of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Documentary Premieres lineup, where it will premiere on Jan. 17.

The film commences with Mitt Romney’s initial bid for the Republic nomination in 2008, chronicling his failures and triumphs until it culminates with his concession speech in 2012.

Whitely’s access to the Romney family during this seven-year period was a surprise even to himself.

“…I couldn’t believe I was filming inside rooms and situations I had no business being in. Now that I’ve finished, I couldn’t be more pleased to share this experience with audiences around the world through Netflix,” he stated.

This film differs from other documentaries surrounding presidential campaigns due to its scope. The popular documentary “Journeys with George,” by Nancy Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra Pelosi, covered 18 months of the traveling press corps and offered the only behind-the-scenes look at George W. Bush’s campaign trail.

Netflix has already given the documentary a positive spin.

“Greg Whiteley’s ‘Mitt’ provides viewers a surprising level of access into a fascinating world,” said Lisa Nishimura, vice president of Netflix’s Original Documentary and Comedy division.

“This rare inside look at Mitt Romney and his family as he runs for president showcases a unique kind of storytelling, one which takes the viewer well beyond the politics.”

“Mitt” will be available to Netflix users worldwide on Jan. 24.
