Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) -- the second richest member of Congress, worth more than $114 million -- took to the House floor this week to lament his financial victimization by the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, according to Roll Call.
In light of November's open enrollment launch for members of Congress and designated staff, McCaul criticized President Barack Obama for breaking his health plan promises.
“I want to tell you about my personal experience with the D.C. exchange. The president said you could keep your care plan, that your premiums will go down,” McCaul said. “Mr. Speaker, I lost my health care plan. I have five kids. My premiums have gone up significantly, and I don’t know if I can keep all the same doctors that I had to treat my kids.”
In September, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security -- who has substantial financial ties to several health insurance companies, including United Health Group -- introduced an amendment to prevent federally elected officials from being exempt from ACA provisions.
“My number one objective continues to be to defund or delay the implementation of Obamacare," McCaul said in a September press release. "But as long as any piece of this law is standing, it needs to apply to all Americans equally and that includes members of Congress and our staff.”
