 Hunter Walker – December 6, 2013, 4:31 PM EST24756

Rick Clark, the sheriff of Pickens County, S.C., vowed on Friday to defy President Obama's order that U.S. flags be lowered to half staff in honor of deceased South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Clark made his promise in a Facebook post to keep flying the flag at the Pickens County Sheriff's Office at full height.

"I usually don't post political items, but today is different. I received this notification today, 'As a mark of respect for the memory of Nelson Mandela, the President orders that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset, December 9, 2013,'" Clark wrote. "Nelson Mandela did great things for his country and was a brave man but he was not an AMERICAN!!! The flag should be lowered at our Embassy in S. Africa, but not here."

Clark said the flags at the Sheriff's Office were at half staff Friday to mourn a deceased deputy. Clark said the flag would remain at half mast Saturday to mark Pearl Harbor Day. After that, he said, he "ordered that the flag here at my office back up" (sic).

Political speech was once tolerated in America. I hope the sheriff remains unscathed by this act of dissent. And, if not, the ACLU should come to his defense.

Good man!  He is exactly right, in that no sitting President has ever ordered the flag flown at half staff for ANY foreigner.  It simply is not done.

Yep. Totally agree.

Respect, fair enough. But half mast is for something serious.

While I do think the US Embassy in Joburg should fly the flag at half mast to show respect to their host country, why should the USA as a whole? That is stupid and almost as tacky as flying the flags at half mast when Whitney Houston died.

Thank God that there is someone left in this country with his head screwed on straight!

Look at his Facebook post, he lowered it for a deputy killed in the line of duty and for Pearl Harbor Day. Tomorrow it will go back up.

So was Viola Pierce.

I was being sarcastic with WH, this lady actually deserves the honor.   All WWII vets, hell all vets, deserve the honor, but they are dying at such a rate we would never fully raise the flag again.

In May he can order flags lowered in remembrance of Adolf Hitler, the man whose guide to dictatorship he appears to be following. :lubyou:

This kind of political speech should be protected.

It will be a good indicator of how far away we are from liberty if ANYTHING happens to this brave man.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.
