Nelson Mandela funeral: George W. Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton to attend Mandela memorial

By JENNIFER EPSTEIN |
12/6/13 4:13 PM EST

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to South Africa for Nelson Mandela's memorials next week, while former President George H.W. Bush will be staying home.

The younger Bush and former first lady Laura Bush "gratefully accepted" the invitation of President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to travel aboard Air Force One, spokesman Freddy Ford said. The trip will be for "memorial services next week," but Ford didn't specify whether that means the Obamas and Bushes will attend a large memorial planned for Dec. 10 in Johannesburg or go to the state funeral set for Dec. 15 in Mandela's hometown, and referred questions to the White House.

Sources confirmed that the Clintons also plan to make the trip, but didn't say whether they will also be traveling on Air Force One.

In my youth I proudly wore the uniform of this nations army while fighting Communists in foreign lands! Now, in my old age, I stand in amazement as our nation's leaders honor the bastards!

And the junior Senator from Tejas, Theodore Cruz, sang the praises of freedom fighter Mandela.

And screws up big time with his narrow but loud group of supporters.

Yes he did! And he heard about it as he damned well should have!

And what makes you think it's a narrow group?

It is narrow because when polls use different potential GOP Potus options vs. the democrats Cruz finishes worst.

Maybe he noticed that himself, and decided to appeal to a wider group of Americans.

That is how elections are won, nationally.

These are times we live in where evil is called good and good is called evil. I think Mandela was a violent punk and wouldn't go one step out of my way for him. Shame on you Bush shame on anyone who thinks this was a great leader. I liked Bush for about 3 years out of his 8 years that was at least a lot longer than I liked Clinton and I never ever liked Obama.

I'm amazed at the anger and hostility directed toward Mandela manifested on this thread.

For once, I agree with Ted Cruz.  Those who condemn him for what he said are true neanderthals.

You know, it's really no surprise the GOP is held in such low esteem by so many Americans.

Politicians like Cruz and Rubio do the decent thing by recognizing Mandela's achievements and graciousness. while their Tea Party supporters condemn them with vitriol.

It's a real shame so many conservatives have shoe-sized IQs.

So Mandela passed away!  Excuse me for NOT giving a damn.   He means nothing to the United States.   And he's not paying my utilities.

Nearly keeled over in shock reading that!

But yeah - I agree. Sure, he was a communist and a terrorist - when he was young. No doubt about that.

People change.

27 years hard labor will change anyone. When he became president of SA he didn't turn it communist, he didn't exact revenge on those who had been in power before, and he insisted on peace. It is a pity he was too old to effectively reign in the ANC, and that the reforms he pushed through effectively but inevitably pushed the presidency to a more ceremonial role. Being president in SA is like being Emperor in Japan or the Queen of England. Theoretically you have a lot of power, practically you have none.

As for the original post - of course the Clinton's and Bush's are going. Both the former Presidents had a long and solid working and personal relationship with Mandela. Since the Worm is taking Air Force 1 there anyway, why shouldn't they hitch a lift on it to pay their respects?

Though one thing might be of interest: A friend of mine posted something on FB. He has a lot of SA friends, plus a lot of UK, Russian and American friends. Not a single one of his SA friends - black or white - has posted anything at all about Mandela.

My original post which Cincy copied was my complaint about the blanket coverage of the media...which even included ESPN.

I have no problem with people praising Mandela's life....was merely speaking for myself.

It had nothing to do with Mandela's being classified a terrorist and/or his past deeds as pointed out here in the forum.

Count me as one who doesn't think that making an appearance at Mandela's funeral indicates support of all he has done.

He really is a mixed bag, and part of him does deserve our respect.

I have to agree here.  Just go--pay respects to a man who did accomplish great things in his life.

Sometimes we get so immersed in our ideological bubble, we can't see the big picture.  Not going would come off as incredibly petty and yes.. hateful.  Kind of like the Obamas not attending Margaret Thatcher's funeral.

Just go.

Funeral services are meant to acknowledge ones accomplishments on this earth, not their failures.

Ditto EC. Christianity instructs us to embrace redemption. It's at the core of our belief.

He never changed one bit! The guy he's standing at the right hand of in the above photo is Joe Slovo the long time leader of the South African Communist Party.

The only thing that's "changed" about him is that the revisionists among us have rewritten the history to suit their own agenda! I hope he and Winnie burn in HELL for what they have done!

I understand your disdain for the man, Bigun. But let me offer this. In the end Mandela rejected violence as a means of achieving political and social ends. However, he never did not reject the fundamental tenants of communism. On that you are correct.

America has its own watered-down communists, democrats. But we fight them at the ballot box – not in the streets. Just think of Mandela in his old age as a South African version of an American Democrat. Wrong politically, but not deserving of hell for his wrong-headed political beliefs.

Mandela achieved what Martin Luther King achieved, only he started down the wrong path. A path he renounced in his later years. I can forgive him that. If I were to be judged by my youthful indiscretions I fear none of you would have anything to do with me.

Nelson Mandella said a great many things! A few that you have not likely heard or read before or at the link!

Unlike Ghandi, Nelson Mandella, like many other such men before him,  only forsook violence after HE no longer found need of it!

Sorry! NO SALE!

It's a real shame so many conservatives have shoe-sized IQs.

It's also quite a shame for many to actually ignore facts.   The left has always loved their dictators and communist leaders, just look at the Che 't' shirts at their gatherings.   This note is from a friend who grew up overseas and has a slightly different viewpoint on the issue:  "if you remember while he was in prison his wife had 100's of people killed. he had to divorce her before he ran for president... and remember... the MF only lasted 1 term!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "
