The Pentagon is considering offering a “second start” to young people who have exposed behavior online that would disqualify them for military service, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday.“ worry a bit about … the young men and women that are now in their early teens who probably underestimate the impact of their persona in social media, and what impact that may have later in life on security clearances and promotions and selections,” Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said during a conference in Washington.“We’d build the future all-volunteer force on the basis of getting a ‘second start,’ ” Gen. Dempsey said. “We’d say to young men and women, ‘You know what? You probably exposed some things in your social media persona … that would disqualify you, actually, from service. But we’re going to give you a shot to start over.’”Gen. Dempsey, the Joint Chiefs’ 18th chairman, has been active on Facebook and Twitter, and is set to conduct his first Facebook town hall Thursday at 1:45 p.m.He spoke Wednesday at a conference on veterans treatment court, which help veterans overcome substance abuse and other issues.editor’s note: smh is social media slang for shaking my head.
