Obamacare site going down for maintenance ahead of deadline

(CNN) -- HealthCare.gov, the problem-plagued federal online site for signing up for insurance under Obamacare, will go down for extended maintenance on Friday night and overnight ahead of Saturday's deadline to have it working for most people, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said.

The Obamacare question: Can the website handle the volume?

The work is set to last from 9 p.m. ET Friday until 8 a.m. ET Saturday.

It's not the first time the website has gone down; the administration has frequently done regular weekend maintenance, usually on Sunday mornings.

During the maintenance checks, the website's application and enrollment system are unavailable, official said.

But one section of the website that verifies income and citizenship information, known as the Data Services Hub, will function as normal, according to officials.

The administration is racing toward Saturday's self-imposed deadline to get the site up and running as intended.

For weeks, President Barack Obama and other officials have been saying a "vast majority" of people will start having a better experience on the federal website by November 30.

The site faced intense scrutiny after its botched launch on October 1, as users frequently faced crashes, error messages and delays when trying to shop or sign up for insurance.

Multiple officials, however, have repeatedly said the website won't be perfect by Saturday, and some problems may remain.

On the eve of the deadline, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius advised users to shop on the website during "off-peak hours," which she described as "mornings/nights/weekends" in a blog post for Huffington Post.

Officials fear another huge surge in volume that the site can't handle, which is what occurred around its launch in October.

HealthCare.gov was originally planned to handle 50,000 concurrent users, and will reach that capacity by Saturday, a White House official said.

However, big spikes in traffic -- such as the 200,000 who tried to get on at the same time on October 1 -- would cause users to go into a queue to receive e-mails advising them when to return, the official noted.

As soon as it is back up, Obama will claim victory and the media will pronounce it a great success.

A guy on Fox last hour (testified to congress about this last week) said what they are doing is changing code and adding new "skin" to the site - doing nothing to actually make it secure and just yesterday Sebilius told everyone to get ready to enter all their tax info into O-Care......  yep when  :pigs fly: :pigs fly: :pigs fly:e]

Obama is going to push this to the very bitter end.

In any case, as the media is finally waking up to...it doesn't matter a hill of beans how many people you sign up if (A) you cannot accurately price their policy, or (B) you cannot collect one red cent from them because the payment system isn't built yet.

This is a rolling disaster that large portions of the liberal glitterati media are desperate to avoid talking about, but which is getting increasingly difficult to ignore....

FOX News, a couple of minutes ago (a little after 10 a.m. EST):
Obama administration officials said Saturday they were "on track" to have the problematic ObamaCare website running smoothly by their self-imposed Nov. 30 deadline.

"With the scheduled upgrades last night and tonight, we're on track to meet our stated goal for the site to work for the vast majority of users," Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services spokesman Aaron Albright told Fox News, in a statement.

Administration officials have since announcing the deadline qualified expectations and outcomes by repeatedly saying the site would work for the “vast majority of people.”

The Washington Post earlier Saturday reported the administration was prepared to announce Sunday that they have met deadlines for improving HealthCare.gov.

Official have said over the past week that the crash-prone site -- which launched Oct. 1 with disastrous results -- will now be able to handle 50,000 users at once. However, technicians failed to reach the deadline to fix at least some of the glitches, according to the newspaper.

Just hours before the deadline, CMS announced the site would be down for an extended period overnight Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday. During that time, the online application and enrollment system was available.

If the site doesn’t deliver, the president's credibility, political support and fate of his landmark health care law could be in jeopardy. If the site is able to recover, it will go a long way in restoring confidence in the program. ...
