Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) has proposed an amendment to a defense bill with the aim of preventing U.S. financial support for the integration of a Chinese missile system with U.S. technology that would ultimately be a part of the NATO defensive shield, National Journal reported Wednesday. Rachel Oswald writes Kirk suggested the amendment for the Senate version of the defense authorization bill for fiscal year 2014 in an effort to stop Turkey from purchasing the Chinese-developed FD-2000 anti-missile system. The proposed provision intends to ban budget appropriation for initiatives that plan to use Chinese missile defense systems with the U.S. defense technology as well as with NATO’s ballistic-missile shield, the report said. Oswald writes the bill is currently up for debate in the Senate with no definite date for when the revision will be up for consideration. If the bill is passed into a law, the effect on Chinese technology integration into NATO’s defense framework is uncertain as the U.S. provides a majority of the technology and equipment for the shield, according to National Journal. According to the report, Kirk and some Republican senators wrote a letter to the State Department and Pentagon last month to ask the Obama administration to restrict the inclusion of Beijing technology into the security infrastructure of NATO. National Journal reports the FD-2000 system is manufactured by a Chinese government-controlled organization, which the U.S. has sanctioned for breaching the 2006 Iran, North Korea and Syria Nonproliferation Act.
