GROVE CITY, Ohio -

A Columbus police SWAT officer was shot in the parking lot of a business while attempting to apprehend a man suspected of shooting a 9-year-old and a woman Friday morning.

The officer and a second person were shot during a standoff in a parking lot located between a Sam's Club and Walmart in the area of Morse Road at about 9:45 a.m.

The officer was transported to Grant Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to police.

According to police sources, at least two, possibly three, SWAT officers in civilian clothing approached the suspect in the parking lot of Sam's Club and Walmart, at which time shots were fired. The suspect was shot and killed.

The officers responded to the parking lot after receiving reports that the suspect in Friday's shooting involving a child and a woman was last seen at that location. A police source tells NBC4 the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Grove City police, officers responded a home in the 2700 block of Independence Way on a report of a shooting at about 8 a.m. Friday.

Officers tell NBC4 a 9-year-old child was shot at the home. The child was transported to an area hospital to be treated.

A second shooting that is believed to be related was reported at Pitts Dentistry located at 4409 South Hamilton Road. Officers say a woman was shot. She was transported to an area hospital. Both victims are expected to survive.

The suspect was identified by police as 47-year-old Danny Thornton.

Highland Park Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precaution. Independence Way is one block west of the school. The school was being taken off of lockdown as of 10:30 a.m.

Officers advise anyone who may see the vehicle to call police at 614-277-1710.
