Its boredom. You wait for the order that will kill 20 million people and that is it. My AMU professor used to play music over the base intercom in the 1960s and 1970s

The shifts for missileers are 24 hour shifts. So they have maybe 23 hours of boredom. Of course, this takes an emotional toll. An experiment with 72-hour tours was started in 2006 but was ended sometime later for unknown reasons.
