The sign in the window warned burglars that the homeowner owned a handgun and would use it in self-defense. The state agents knocking on the door were there to confiscate the weapon.

The agents are part of the California Department of Justice's Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS), a program that takes firearms from people barred from owning them. The law says that group can include ex-felons and people deemed to be mentally unstable.

Often arriving in SUVs and dressed in black tactical uniforms, the teams regularly sweep through California cities with a list of names and addresses.

It was Fresno's turn last week.

The real disturbing part here is a judge can deem anyone 'mentally unstable' and strip that person of their rights. Your neighbor who you are having a feud with may decide to anonymously report to a judge or the police that you are depressed and possibly suicidal and bam, your rights are stripped.

California has also reduced the threshold of who no longer has the right to own a gun from anyone convicted of a felony to even anyone convicted of a misdemeanor.

Showing up armed and in black tac gear.

Wait til the first time they wake a combat vet out of a sound sleep with their knock.

Taking guns from anyone deemed mentally unstable. Well, that will include all gun owners soon.
Who said registration leads to confiscation? /s

Perhaps a better analogy than to Hitler's brown shirts would be to Mussolini's black shirts.  Sartorial differences aside, though, there is precious little philosophical or political difference between the historical and the present-day on this account.
