The most left-leaning candidate for City Council speaker says she would consider using eminent domain to seize homes that are in foreclosure from banks – a move that could leave taxpayers subsidizing the mortgages.

Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-Manhattan/Bronx), a close ally of Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, said she was open to the proposal when asked about it during a forum in Queens Thursday night featuring five main contenders in the race for speaker.

“The idea of using eminent domain in a reverse way… as a way of seizing those properties from the bank as a way of making those homes affordable for people that want to stay in their communities I think is something we should look at,” said Mark-Viverito, a top contender for the powerful role. “I think it’s innovative, it’s creative … nothing should be off the table.”

I wonder if most New Yorkers have a clue who they voted into office.

Why yes, I'm sure they do.

This is only the beginning. The incoming de Blasio administration may actually turn out to be more leftist than the Obama regime. And that's sayin' a lot.

By the end of four years, it may wake _some_ of the lefty loonies of New York City up.
But not all that many. I wouldn't be surprised to see de Blasio re-elected no matter what he does. Most NYC'ers would rather die or be disemboweled before they'd vote for "a Republican"...

Bloomberg was never a Republican -- he was actually a democrat who changed his party affiliation to run the first time...

Rudy was an anamoly, probably not to be repeated.

Too bad. The renaissance he brought to the city is already crumbling and corroding...

Advice for the possible two people who have not:

Read Isaac Asimov's "The Caves of Steel." While he was never overtly political in his earlier work - for example you never know what the political structure in New York is, except the Mayor is powerful - he understood communism well and how it worked, and could see the end result better than most.

Besides, it is a bloody good book.

Maybe something like this, and 4 more years of it (or whatever a NYC mayor's term is)  is what it will take for ultra hip, liberal New Yorkers to experience a real taste of real socialism being shoved down their throats.

I had an alternative plan with the foreclosed homes.  When the banks got bailed out, the homes should have bulldozed.  Why should they get paid twice?  It would have also maintained the price of homes already on the market, rather than collapse them.
