PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- The Chevron Pascagoula Refinery experienced an explosion and fire at one of its processing units at approximately 2 a.m. this morning, according to a statement released by the company and Jackson County emergency officials.

"Refinery teams have responded to the emergency, and the site is secure," the statement continued. "There is no danger to the community. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

"We have confirmed one fatality. We will not release any details until the person's family has been notified. Our thoughts and prayers are with that family"

Federal, state and local authorities have been notified.

Jackson County Emergency Services Director Earl Etheridge said fire units from Pascacoula, Jackson County and the Forts Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to offer backup support to Chevron's fire crews.

"We have a response plan in case of an incident at Chevron and we followed that plan," Etheridge said. "All we do is supply support and protect outside the fence line.
