Obama reportedly unaware of world leader phone tapping

Just what in the world is this president aware of?  He's not aware of Benghazi, the problems with Obamacare, Fast & Furious, NSA spying, IRS spying, etc., etc. yet no one has been disciplined for anything.  Maybe he just doesn't want to be aware so he can "vote present."

Obama Reportedly Unaware of World Leader Phone Tapping

Oct. 27, 2013

By ABC NEWS via Good Morning America

U.S. officials responded Sunday night to a report that the National Security Agency ended a program used to spy on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders only after an internal Obama administration review started this summer exposed the operation.

An unnamed senior official told The Wall Street Journal that the White House "cut off some monitoring programs after learning of them, including the one tracking Ms. Merkel and some other world leaders. Other programs have been slated for termination but haven't been phased out completely yet."

The NSC issued a statement late Sunday noting that the administration is reviewing the spy program, but it did not address the specifics of the Journal story.

"Today's world is highly interconnected, and the flow of large amounts of data is unprecedented. That's why the President has directed us to review our surveillance capabilities, including when it comes to our closest foreign partners and allies," Caitlin Hayden, National Security Council spokewoman, said in the statement. "Through this review, led by the White House, the United States is reviewing the way that we gather intelligence to ensure that we properly account for the security concerns of our citizens and allies and the privacy concerns that all people share, and to ensure that our intelligence resources most effectively support our foreign policy and national security objectives."

She added, "The Administration's review is ongoing so I'm not in a position to discuss the details. I am also not going to detail our internal discussions."

According to the Journal, the unnamed officials said the internal review disclosed NSA monitoring of 35 world leaders. The U.S. government has not publically acknowledged the phone tapping, which came to light last week. Last week White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Obama had assured Merkel that the United States "is not monitoring and will not monitor" the communications of the chancellor.

Germany's interior minister is pressing for "complete information" from Washington on the alleged U.S. surveillance of Merkel's cellphone and any other snooping, The Associated Press reported.

Merkel complained to President Barack Obama on Wednesday after receiving information her phone may have been monitored. German spy chiefs are planning to travel to Washington for talks.

Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich was quoted Sunday as telling newspaper Bild am Sonntag he wants "complete information on all accusations" and that "if the Americans intercepted cellphones in Germany, they broke German law on German soil." He added wiretapping is a crime and "those responsible must be held accountable."

News magazine Der Spiegel, whose research prompted the government's response, reported that a document apparently from an NSA database indicates Merkel's cellphone was first listed as a target in 2002.

With reporting by The Associated Press.

And so it turns out that the world's most brilliant Harvard Law School graduate ever, the Nobel Prize-winning author of two best-selling autobiographies before he was 50, the One We've Been Waiting For, the Transformative President of hope and change ... doesn't know shit about anything.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Only what he reads in the newspapers. If it weren't for the WH subscriptions we pay for he would have absolutely know idea what's going on in his own administration.

Btw, I want to know if this is true:

I thought Snowden outed this monitoring but I may be incorrect. In any case I find it difficult to believe Obama & Co just happened to stumble across it. Moreover, if they did, why didn't someone tell his Highness? Didn't he claim he only found out about it from news reports?

"Plausible deniability" run amock. Boy crying wolf. At some point, one's credibility is shot.

I can't even begin to imagine the CEO, say of GE, not being told of major events that might prove very troublesome for the company.  If he found out the person/persons who were responsible for hanging him out to dry would be fired immediately.  Not so in the Obama administration, no one is being fired which indicates he knew about these things. :peeonobama:

[[ Only what he reads in the newspapers. ]]

Only what Valerie and a few others tell him. I doubt he even bothers to read many (any?) of the newspapers.

Obama seems to handle his job in the Oval Office as well as he did in the office of The Harvard Law Reveiw...

Obama knew.  He knew just as Reagan knew about Iran-Contra.  The only difference twixt the two on this point - lack of knowledge of scandalous goings on - is that Reagan apologized sincerely for his actions; Obama hasn't, and won't.

I'll bet he reads National Inquirer, People, Golf digest, and Hollyweird today. :coffee:
