Lying to Save Face - the Obama Administration's Go-To Move

By Onan Coca   / 2 November 2013   / 39 Comments

What is it with the Obama administration’s chronic inability to tell the truth? It’s starting to feel like they may really have a problem. Some might even go as far as calling anyone who works in the Obama administration a pathological liar.

Well, they’ve been caught lying yet again.

In the first couple of weeks after the Obamacare rollout began, it became painfully obvious to everyone observing that the rollout was a complete and utter failure. With all of the problems with Obamacare it was easy to miss out on the most important things, so the media tried to focus on what they thought was the most important aspect of the roll out. How many people had signed up for Obamacare?

Easy question, right? Apparently not for the Obama team.

On October 3, White House spokesperson Jay Carney, pressed for enrollment numbers, said, “No, we don’t have that data.”

On October 7, in an appearance on the Daily Show, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius repeated the claim when questioned about enrollment: “I can’t tell you,” she said, “because I don’t know.”

After a couple of weeks of not getting any information on this front, the media began to rebel – even liberals at the left’s favorite media outlet, MSNBC, were getting tired of the obfuscation and lies.

“The secrecy is unacceptable… how many people have enrolled? I don’t understand why they can’t release that information?”

Now we know why they wouldn’t release the information – because it was embarrassing.

Apparently there were only SIX successful enrollees on the first day that the Obamacare exchange opened for business. Day two went a little better for the Obama administration as 242 people signed up for coverage. Bringing the exciting two day toll to 248 people. The lack of interest would have been a big story in and of itself, but we now know that the Obama administration knew from the start what the enrollment numbers were… even though they said otherwise.

lyingsebeliusThe short-hand is that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius lied.

Leaked meeting notes from high-level war room briefings inside the federal health bureaucracy on October 2 and October 3 report that federal officials were aware of the exact number of federal enrollees on the first and second days in which the exchanges were running.

It’s possible that the White House spokesman Jay Carney was unaware (possible but unlikely), but it’s ridiculous to think that the person in charge of the Obamacare roll out wasn’t made aware of the high level meeting where they discussed how many people had enrolled. This would have been her chief concern and something she would have been working to figure out from the start.

Folks, Secretary Sebelius has been lying all along.
