Then there's hope for Detroit. No, not because the presumptive next mayor is white. But, because blacks in that city may be beginning to shed the racism endemic in America's black citizens. Yes, that's right. It's not easy to let go of generational bitterness. But, maybe, just maybe, Detroit's economic woes has forced blacks there to finally confront and own the wisdom of MLK's words:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

One caveat. Unlike white America in 2008, who voted for Barack Obama just to show they were not racist, let's hope blacks in Detroit are favoring Mike Duggan because he's the best candidate for the job.
