WSJ: Uh Oh. Obamacare Enrollees Older Than Expected

The Wall Street Journal has a piece I thought you would want to see today – it’s behind their paywall – reporting that those who have bought insurance under Obamacare so far are much older than expected.

This is very very bad news for Obamacare, because young people who will pay for insurance but won’t need health care services that cost insurers cash money are ESSENTIAL for Obamacare work. Otherwise, the insurance companies lose money on older, sicker enrollees and must either force youngsters to sign up at gunpoint or raise prices for everyone.

Or go out of business.

That is, liberal geniuses have concocted a special scheme called Obamacare that seeks to make Americans do what Lefties know is best but which also happens to be against people’s self-interest. It is a perfect example of liberals trying to mold the square peg of human behavior into the round hole of their utopian fantasies.

The article cites numerous examples of money-losing demographics
Quote
The average enrollee age at Priority Health, a Michigan insurer, has ticked up to age 51 for newcomers, from about 41 years old for plans offered for the current year, said Joan Budden, chief marketing officer. Arise Health Plan, Wisconsin’s largest nonprofit insurer, said more than half its 150 signees are over 50, a higher proportion than expected, while declining to be specific on its target age . . .

At a health-law education event in North Carolina last week, more than 100 people, mostly in their 40s and 50s, came. “I actually didn’t see a single young person,” said Liz Gallops, an insurance agent from Raleigh, N.C., who attended.

Insurers are hoping for an average enrollee age of about 40.

Part of the skewing is due to the dysfunctional website, because those who need health insurance the most are more likely to keep hitting “enter” until something works. But even in states running their own exchanges, where things have been smoother, it’s the elders and not their grandkids who are signing up.

Quote
In states that are running their own marketplaces and have seen smoother rollouts, officials are now also reporting a similar phenomenon, suggesting the economics of the law play a role, too. In Connecticut and Kentucky, which have enrolled more than 4,000 people each in private health plans so far, the largest segments of enrollees in new commercial health-law plans are over age 55, much older than industry actuaries say they had anticipated

What’s more, higher proportions of younger people are simply signing up for Medicaid, putting them on the public dole instead of assisting with insurers’ bottom lines.

Once insurers start raising premiums, Democrats will drag them before congressional committees and accuse them of gauging consumers. And once they start going out of business, the march toward a single-payer system – that is, a nationalized health insurance program – will be on.

It’s what most liberals, likely including President Obama, are seeking as the cornerstone of our future Workers’ Paradise.

So sing with me, if you will, the Internationale, as we look forward to the day when we are One Nation, Under God, and Under Obamacare. And, if necessary, Under Martial Law.

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
 Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
 Away with all your superstitions
 Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

Refrain:
 So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we’ll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They’ll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E’er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.
