GOP FOIAs Number of Obamacare Enrollees

The National Republican Committee filed a Freedom of Information Act request Monday seeking the number of Americans who have enrolled in health care through the Obamacare website since the program was rolled out on Oct. 1.

The White House has so far refused to release any information on the number of enrollees following the glitch-ridden rollout of the Obamacare website, leading Republican critics to accuse the administration of a cover-up.

Politicians and pundits are also calling for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ resignation in the wake of the botched launch.

“Kathleen Sebelius and the Obama administration spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on this website, but Americans trying to use it have gotten little more than error messages and crashing web pages,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. “It’s important for Americans to see these numbers because they illustrate just how terrible the system is and how poorly designed the law was. The administration isn’t living up to its promises, and they must be held accountable.”

I cannot imagine on what ground Obama & Co will oppose this suit. Executive privilege? Over what? You can rest assured they know how many have enrolled but are hiding the number probably because it is so low. Meanwhile they are claiming something like 2 million have inquired. How do they know that number but not the other?

It seems obvious to me that they know how many have signed up. More than likely this is just Obama not wanting to release information that the Republicans will use to make Obamacare look bad. He wants to fix whatever glitches there are and give people a chance to navigate a properly functioning healthcare.gov before he releases numbers. His hope is that the numbers will shoot up once the site works.

It's no secret that the right wants Obamacare to fail, and with that in mind it is not hard to imagine that the right will use anything they can to discredit Obamacare. There's nothing wrong with that, but because Obama wants the opposite, he is going to try to avoid releasing anything that might slow momentum even more.

Trouble accessing http://healthcare.gov ? Obama says to enroll by mail. Only our government could develop a website that's slower than mail!
