My first response after reading this article was to the writer, 'Screw you!  It's obvious you hate America and that you are a liberal!'

But my next response is to say that I agree with a lot of it.  I am disgusted by American culture myself.  Anymore, it is materialistic, amoral, psychotic, coarse and incredibly shallow.  The MainStream Media in America is one of the lowest lifeforms on earth.

I think that we're going to have to fix a lot of things before we can turn this Titanic America around.  It is very depressing, but thank you for your kind words about Americans, EC.  Are you unusual among the British in that you like us - you REALLY like us?

Not unusual among the Brits who have worked with Americans and done business in the USA.

To give you one example. I picked up a writing job for a NYC based TV show. Had to show up to sign the contract, meet the team - the usuals.  Was told bluntly - don't book a hotel room. You are staying with us. That was by the producer. We had only ever talked by email.

I had pretty much the same reaction.

What the author seems entirely clueless about is that the decline of American culture corresponds to a decline in traditional American values and the rise of secular corporate socialism.  She laments the "free lunch" mentality of Americans even as she advocates more government.  She points out how much more advanced they are in Singapore and Dubai, but fails to see the connection between the success of these places and their embrace of free market capitalism, even as we sink further into the abyss of regulated markets and government handouts.

I do agree with her that material comforts don't bring happiness.  It's all about the struggle.  In my life, the years I spent struggling were some of the happiest of my life, though I didn't always realize it at the time.  My question is if you erect a minimum wage, give people unemployment or disability benefits for life, hand out food stamps like candy and lead the masses by denigrating success, aren't you depriving people of the struggle?

No wonder they go to Walmart and empty out the store with government credit cards instead of looking for a job, or better yet, creating jobs for themselves.
