London's hospitals are at "breaking point" and face a £4bn shortfall by 2020, NHS England has warned.

The organisation, which works to improve the NHS, says patient care will be harmed unless there is a "radical and urgent overhaul" of the service.

It said demands for healthcare will soon outstrip supply due to a rising and ageing population and increasing costs, making the NHS "unsustainable".

The Department of Health said the NHS should make £20bn of savings by 2015.

NHS England in London has outlined several factors which are putting pressure on the service in the capital. These include:

Life expectancy in London has risen by 5.2 years since 1990 - a year longer than the national average - but stark variations exist between boroughs
About 80% of premature deaths in London are attributable to lifestyle factors, such as alcohol, smoking, poor diet and a lack of exercise
More than 130,000 women give birth in London every year, and the birth rate is increasing by 3% a year.
The number of Londoners aged 65 and over is set to increase by 19% by 2020.
1 in 5 children in London are at risk of obesity
The rate of acute sexually transmitted diseases is higher in London than in any other region.

'Fundamentally change'

Dr Anne Rainsberry, regional director for NHS England, said: "Based on our expectations of patient demands and that we expect a period of flat financial growth, we are likely to have an affordability gap of £4bn in London by 2020

For the BBC to bit hitting at one of the sacred cows of UK politics is unnerving, to say the least.

Socialized medicine always 'saves' money by restricting supply.

Yeah, they'll probably start doing what Obama has in mind for our older generation.
Deny them treatments and let them die off.  Problem solved!

From the article:
[[ More than 130,000 women give birth in London every year, and the birth rate is increasing by 3% a year. ]]

One wonders how many of those births are from "native" Euro-Brits, as distinguished from births to muslims or non-Euro Brits...

Probably similar to what's going on now in the big-city hospitals down in Texas...

That already happens in UK hospitals to a certain degree.  They have so-called end-of-life procedures that are supposed to be voluntary, but are sometimes applied by doctors without adequate consultation with the family, that emphasize painkillers over treatment for individuals who are in extremis.  In other words, why use up medical resources when in the opinion of the doctor - whose performance is almost certainly measured in part by how cost-effective his/her case management is - those resources would be "wasted" because the doctor is "certain" the patient will soon die; instead, they drug the patient up high enough so he or she is essentially comatose when the end comes - never mind that in some cases the narcotics used as painkillers can themselves kill a person who, although close to the edge, would not have died but for the too-high dose of narcotics.

I believe there was a case just recently of a man who was in a coma, the doctors were "certain" he was going to die in any event - and had therefore not given any attention to whether he was even receiving basic care such as adequate water - and were prepared to drug him up and let him die until his family showed up and discovered that with some basic hydration he "came back from the dead."  I may be getting some of the details wrong, but I believe I captured the essence of the story.

Given that the UK NHS is even so now facing such massive cost overruns, I've no doubt that consultation with the family will become a thing of the past and more and more people - and people who are further and further from the brink of death - will be given painkillers instead of treatment, and basically left to die of thirst or the side-effects of the painkillers.

As goes the UK NHS, so goes Obamacare.  Sarah Palin most certainly was not lying - or confabulatin' - when she spoke out against the "death panels" provided for under Obamacare.
