Rep. Peter King backs discharge petition on ‘clean’ funding bill
By Mike Lillis - 10/11/13 02:02 PM ET

Rep. Peter King (N.Y.) would support a discharge petition on a "clean" spending bill if GOP leaders don't bring it to the floor soon, the centrist Republican vowed this week.

King has long pushed Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to take up the Senate-passed continuing resolution (CR) to reopen the government. But he has refused to buck leadership further by endorsing the Democrats' discharge petition, which would force a floor vote on the bill.

Until Friday.

"If we have to do a discharge petition, ultimately, we will, but this is going to come [to the floor]," King said in an interview with Bloomberg's Al Hunt that is scheduled to air Friday night.

"I think John Boehner has wanted this moment all along," King added. "He never wanted to close the government. He was backed into it by this group of 30 or 40 people. Now he has the leverage he needs, and I think it's going to come to the House floor, no matter what."

More than 20 House Republicans have indicated they would back a clean CR if it came to the floor, but King is the first to announce his support for the Democrats' discharge petition.

Boehner last month attempted to move a spending bill to prevent a government shutdown that the Senate could have passed “clean,” but his right-most flank insisted that changes to ObamaCare be part of the bill. The conservative opposition led to a prolonged back-and-forth between House Republicans and Senate Democrats over the healthcare provisions.

When no deal was reached by Oct. 1, much of the government shut down.

President Obama has publicly said he won’t negotiate with Republicans on either the CR or the debt ceiling until the dual crises are resolved. The shutdown entered its 11th day Friday.

But with polls showing that voters are blaming Republicans to a much greater degree than Obama for the impasse, GOP leaders have begun to soften their position in recent days, and it appears that the White House is negotiating with them.

On Thursday, Republicans offered Obama a new plan under which they would agree to extend the Treasury's borrowing authority through Nov. 22 if Obama will agree to negotiate with them on a longer-term budget deal that would reopen the government.

King predicted Friday that clean bills to raise the debt ceiling and end the shutdown would pass easily — if GOP leaders would bring them to the floor.

“I think it would have passed earlier in the week after the poll numbers have come out," he told Bloomberg. "It's going to pass overwhelmingly."

It's over, folks.  That NBC/WSJ poll slammed Republicans in Congress right between the eyes.

They're backpedaling like hell.  As some of us predicted, the GOP will get nothing but a promise to talk about the budget out of this.

What a waste.  What a friggin' waste.  The last two weeks could have been about the horrible Obamacare roll out and driving Obamacare's numbers down.  Instead, we have 50% of the country saying they want to keep Obamacare.

Ted Cruz got his email list for his quixotic run in 2016, but he's left the GOP in ruins.

Ted Cruz has done nothing of the sort and is a beloved senator of which there are only about 5 of in all the republican party. Boehner is the big problem for the party in the house. The senate is filled up with rhinos who are destroying the party and the country. Sinkspur you really are a rhino yourself and a big problem for the republican party since you endorse the move they are making to socialism instead of fighting for our constitution.

The GOP has lost this showdown.  Obama will get all he wants, and we'll get a repeal of the medical device tax.   Look for the sequester to go in a budget conference.

We'll be worse off than if we hadn't had the shutdown at all.

This "poll" isn't worth the paper it's printed on!

Loaded questions, samples ADULTS instead of registered voters or likely voters...

Not worth spit!

And one more thing.  I am sick of the only people getting representation in DC is who can afford to pay a lobbyist... case in point the medical device tax... ohhhhhhhh everyone is all of a sudden worried about that ..... because they have a lobby pounding on all the senators and congressmen about it... but we, THE PEOPLE have NO ONE but Mike Lee, Ted Cruz and a handful of others....

I think Boehner was trying to use that as "leverage" and then, telling us he compromised. He's a loser.

What I know is Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, McConnell, etc. don't give a fig what any of us poor working and voting schlubs think or want, they want us to crawl back into our little daily lives and let them go about the process of their little aristocracy in the congress and the senate.  No wonder they want to take control over the internet, they liked it much better when we were all quiet and dumb and just re-elected them over and over and over again.  And THAT is the root of the problem and why we need term limits for everyone.

How true! I had no one to talk to about politics except my dad, at least, for the most part. I wrote several letters to the editor, and that's it. Then, one evening, I was ironing while watching the news. Tom Brokaw came on and said something so outrageous, that I stopped ironing, and went out and got a computer. That was in 1998. And off I was! I didn't have Fox News until around 2000.

I can't remember the exact date I started watching FOX, I know Bill O'Reilly looked a whole lot younger than today ~LOL~

You're so full of B.S. when it comes to matters like this.  Question:  what's your personal stake in Obamacare?  How much money do you stand to make on the roll-out of that abomination?  In other words, who's buttering your bread, and what side are they buttering it on?

I have no stake in Obamacare.  I would love for it to be overturned.  But idiots like Cruz and Lee were on a fools errand, trying to defund Obama's signature achievement.  He was never going to allow that.

Yes, the roll out is an abomination. And that's where the focus would be if the GOP hadn't followed those two over the cliff and shutdown the government.

Instead, we have cheerleaders like you thinking that somehow, someway, Obamacare was going to be defunded or delayed.

How's that workin' out for ya?

Bullshit.  You talk all nice and purty when you're called on the carpet for it, but otherwise all of your posts here demonstrate that you're just happy as a clam with Obamacare and detest the idea of it being repealed or interfered with in any manner.

Where would the focus be if the democrats had not shut down the government?  That's right, sonny, it wasn't the GOP who shut down the government, it was the democrats, who absolutely refused to budge an inch, to negotiate even a jot or a tittle, in order to get the basic needs - what they call "supply" in parliamentary systems - of the government funded.  And it is a testament to the self-loathing of so many apparent "republicans" such as yourself that the blame for that gets alchemically turned against the republicans, the very people who have been offering up all manner of resolutions to keep the basic needs of the government funded.

Whether Cruz was right or wrong is not really material because the blunt fact of the matter is that so long as so many republicans in Congress are cut from the same collaborationist cloth as you are, the GOP will always be in the wrong, no matter what it does (other than, of course, simply rubber-stamping what the democrats want to do).  The primary value of Cruz is the demonstration that if a republican keeps his cojones instead of mortgaging them to the democrats/liberals, he can, in fact, resist the democrats and can rally enough other republicans to put the brakes on the DNC.

Do you really think the country would be moaning and wailing and gnashing teeth over the roll-out of Obastardcare if Cruz had sat meekly in Congress and mouthed pretty pleasantries about how "the next time" they'd get the democrats and stand up to them but good?  Seriously?  Are you still waiting for your rainbow-colored unicorn?

People would be doing exactly what they're doing right now, wimpering about the higher costs and the effed up "exchanges" but going along with it because they have no other choice and besides, isn't the website crashing just a demonstration of how valuable Obastardcare is?  That surely means that so many people who really needed what Obastardcare is offering are coming out of the woodwork and getting their health insurance, thanks to Obastardcare.  That's not just my speculation, that's one of the party lines being pimped around by some of the democrat/liberal propaganda mouthpieces.

You really don't have a clue about much of anything, do you?

I'm beginning to wonder if the whole thing isn't a psyop to improve Bambi's image after the trouncing he took from Putin and Assad.

You know, show some 'leadership' by defeating the 'evil Republicans' and saving the nation...

LOL! It was almost like that, since I didn't know anything at all. I ended up buying a Web TV for dummies. After I learned how to use it, I didn't like it because it was slow, so a month or so later, got the HP. Now, I have two laptops, the HP, and another my brother-in-law built for me. The grandkids use the desktops, and I make sure at least one of the laptops are always working. I was 51 then, and am glad I did because I went to college a few years later, and the computer was a necessity.  Am going back to college to take a few courses just for something to do, and am taking my laptop with me.
