Don't know if any of you here have read 2000AD (the comic Judge Dredd comes from) But there was one panel, back in 1981, that has always stuck with me, though for the life of me I can't remember which story arc it was.

Sooner or later this is the endgame for all of humanity. It may not be in my lifetime, or even the lifetime of my children, but eventually technology will become so advanced that there just aren't enough jobs left for most people to have one. People will live off of the machine technology created.
