Due to the Federal government shutdown,
NOAA.gov and most associated web sites
are unavailable.

More of those 'non-essential' services.

There are some pretty important services too, buoy info, for example, is vital for ships (status of currents).

You're right.  My remarks are inappropriate at best.

That said, what happens to navigation integrity?

How did anyone ever navigate a ship before NOAA?

Magellan must have been a miracle man!

Originally, Columbus' fleet was the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria, the Maurice, and the Schmoigle

Nobody ever hears about the two ships lost due the the NOAA being out of service.
Trump has created a cult and looks more and more like Hitler every day.

For the record, all the weather monitoring and forecasting services are still operational (including the obviously non-essential experimental and long-range services) under the life and property clause.

http://www.weather.gov/

Of course, of all the services that could benefit from a shutdown, private meteorologists like myself would be first on the list, since for years we have been undercut by the government's free, public-domain forecasts that can be copied at will. Pretty much every other country copyrights their forecasts, models, radar, etc. and makes them available for a very generous license.
