Quote
(CNSNews.com) - President Obama lectured Republicans about their "attitude" problem on Thursday, telling an audience in suburban Maryland that Republican "extremists" are the only thing standing in the way of a "yes-or-no vote" on a continuing resolution to fund the federal government.

He quoted a House Republican as refusing to be "disrespected" by failing to "get something" out of the CR vote.

"If you're being disrespected, it's because of that attitude you've got -- that you deserve to get something for doing your job," Obama said. "Everybody here just does their job."

Obama prefaced his remarks by saying, "The only thing that is keeping the government shut down, the only thing preventing people from going back to work and basic research starting back up and farmers and small business owners getting their loans, the only thing that's preventing all that from happening, right now, today, in the next five minutes, is that Speaker John Boehner won't even let the bill get a yes-or-no vote because he doesn't want to anger the extremists in his party. That's -- that's all. That's what this whole thing is about."

Then Obama quoted an unnamed House Republican: "I didn't make this up," Obama said: "One House Republican said, 'We're not going to be disrespected, we have to get something out of this, and I don't know what that even is.'" (Laughter)

Obama repeated the quote and urged his audience to think about it: Speaking about House Republicans, he said, "You have already gotten the opportunity to serve the American people. There's no higher honor than that. You've already gotten the opportunity to help businesses like this one, workers like these. So the American people aren't in the mood to give you a goodie bag to go with it."

Obama said House Republicans should be content to put people back to work. "That's what you should be asking for," he said. "Take a vote, stop this farce, and end this shutdown right now."

Republicans have said they will fund all of government on a short-term basis except for Obamacare. They say this is their only chance to stop what they (and some Democrats) have called a "train wreck."

Republicans also have criticized Obama for his uncompromising attitude, specifically, his refusal to even try to bring the two sides together.
