Sounds like it was a local thug leading a police chase that just happened to end up on the Capitol grounds.

At first I thought Jim McDermott finally snapped.

I just read the policeman who was shot was probably shot by another officer, the woman wasn't armed. Also, she didn't ram the Capitol fence but a barricade on 15th and Pennsylvania, a few blocks away close to Pershing Park.

Reading that now too from the wire. Possibly hurt by the car or barricade.

Obama briefed on D.C. security incident
    By JENNIFER EPSTEIN |
    10/3/13 3:11 PM EDT

President Obama has been briefed on the Thursday afternoon security incident on Capitol Hill, a White House official said.

"White House staff are in touch with law enforcement and monitoring the incident," the official said, referring other questions to the Secret Service.

Secret Service personnel at the White House confirmed that a vehicle slammed into a gate on the south side of the White House complex before speeding off towards the Capitol.

“A vehicle struck a bollard at 15th and Pennsylvania,” near a checkpoint that allows access to the south side of White House complex, a law enforcement source told POLITICO. “It continued driving down Pennsylvania Avenue towards the Captiol.”

The cautioned against saying the vehicle rammed the White House checkpoint, saying the auto collided with something there and drove off.

Carrie Budoff Brown and Josh Gerstein contributed to this report.

Yes.  At the short presser, they said he was "hit," so I don't know if it was by the car, or something else.

Shots fired near Capitol after car chase starting at White House

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/10/03/us-capitol-in-lockdown-reports-shots-fired/

Quote
Shots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol after a car chase that started when a woman tried to ram a security barrier near the White House, putting the Hill temporarily on lockdown in a chaotic scene Thursday afternoon.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, one officer was injured in a related car crash. One person could be seen being carried off in a stretcher -- it's not clear if that was the officer.

Officials say the incident was not related to terrorism, and the suspect is in custody.

Terrance Gainer, the Senate sergeant at arms, told Fox News that this appears to be an "isolated incident." Gainer also said the officer injured crashed a police cruiser while trying to join the chase. The cruiser "seriously clipped" a barricade, he said, but the injuries are "not life threatening."

The chase and stand-off caused panic on Capitol Hill, with sirens blaring inside the building and lawmakers and their staff being ordered to stay in place. The lockdown has since been lifted, and those inside the Capitol are no longer being ordered to "shelter in place."

Sources told Fox News the incident began with a car chase, which started when a woman tried to ram a gate near the White House.

Several police cars pursued her to a location near the Capitol building.

When they boxed her in, sources said, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired. Witnesses saw a baby being taken from the car.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene.

"We were definitely caught off guard, we were scared," said Matt Knuppeo, who said he was touring the Capitol building when the stand-off unfolded. "It was mass panic for a while."

"We just heard the gun shots -- pow pow pow pow," witness Emily Wheeler told Fox News.

The developments come as lawmakers were debating a series of small spending bills, amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The violence follows the mass shooting last month at the Washington Navy Yard.

The woman had a baby with her I really doubt she had any sinister motives and I think the reaction to her was way beyond what was called for unless she got out of her car and was shooting at someone which it doesn't sound like. All the news said she got out of her car not that she did anything. What is it with policeman these days they now shoot first and make up a story afterwards that warrants it.

LE does not know this.  Good grief.  The actions provoked an appropriate protective response.  Have you heard of suicide bombers?  Women and children?  If not, get informed about the real world around you.

Some of us think another day of no nonessential government services IS progress.

It is simply amazing how all the early posts are completely wrong and incorrect.

Geesh......and this at a time when everybody that can fog a mirror has a video camera on them and the area that it went down is literally blanketed with cameras.

Amazing..... :thud:

Former Secret Service officer Dan Bongino...who unsuccessfully ran for the Maryland Senate as a Republican was just on WMAL 630AM and he said that it is too common for drivers to get turned around at that 15th Street NW location....and there is no turnaround.

Sadly, it could have been just a breaking point in her frustration in dealing with Washington, DC traffic.
