Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other high-profile Hill Democrats will mark Obamacare’s Oct. 1 launch with a Capitol Hill ceremony that afternoon.
Joining the Democratic leaders will be Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, Tom Harkin of Iowa and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland; Reps. Sander Levin of Michigan, George Miller of California and Henry Waxman of California, all top Democrats on the committees that handle health care, according to an event summary provided to POLITICO.
The event will also feature SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, AFSCME President Lee Saunders; other progressive leaders, uninsured Americans and those already benefiting from the law.
“Oct. 1 means middle-class families will no longer be one illness, one accident or one medical emergency away from financial ruin,” read the notice from Americans United for Change, Protect Your Care and other progressive groups. They’re planning similar events around the country to mark the open enrollment launch.
The event is an acknowledgment by the law’s supporters that, even though the enrollment period will last for six months, the first day is turning into a huge media event.
Obamacare supporters have tried to downplay the significance of the Oct. 1 date, the first day people can sign up for the law’s new coverage. They say there won’t be a huge enrollment rush in the first few weeks of the open enrollment period, and they expect some technology glitches in the beginning – some of which have already started to show.
