Clinton: Shutdown could help Dems
By Rebecca Shabad - 09/24/13 04:13 PM ET

Hillary Clinton warned Tuesday against the budget debate amounting to a government shutdown, but said it could be a good thing for her party.

“[It] wouldn’t be the worst thing for Democrats,” the former secretary of State said at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), according to multiple reports.

Clinton was asked about her opinion of a possible government shutdown on Oct. 1 during a panel event in New York, which began Monday.

Republicans should go back and read history because it didn’t work out for them before, she said.

“We’ve seen that movie before,” Clinton said.

When the federal government last shut down, in 1995 and 1996, Republicans were largely blamed for that outcome while former President Clinton prevailed. He touted his success in his campaign for reelection, and the GOP took a hit.

The Clintons have been defending ObamaCare, which House Republicans want to defund. The lawmakers passed a bill Friday containing language that would strip the reform law’s funding. Senate Democrats have promised to reinstate it in their own version of the resolution.

President Obama, who has been in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, will discuss the healthcare law’s implementation with former President Clinton at the CGI Tuesday evening.

ObamaCare’s full provisions are scheduled to take effect Jan. 1.
