To show their support for an anti-discrimination bill, same-sex members of Italy’s parliament on Friday stood up and began hugging and kissing each other.

The bill, which passed 354-79 in the lower house, criminalizes homophobic and transphobic discrimination.

Members who participated in the kiss-in belong to the progressive Five Star Movement (M5S), lead by Beppe Grillo. Other politicians who supported the measure, held up anti-discriminatory signs during the meeting.

Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party expects the bill to fail in the Senate.

MP Federica Daga tweeted that the meaning of the demonstration is simple: “Equal rights and dignity without gender. Because a kiss and a hug are not scary.”
