Why is the Republican party hellbent on joining the Charlatan in the White House in an act that will only kill innocent civilians and won't do a single thing to bring down Assad?

Yes.  This is a stupid move policy-wise, and idiotic politically.  If Republicans vote for this, they are complicit in whatever happens.

Also, if Republicans were able to defeat a move to war, they would weaken Obama and potentially cripple him in the debt-ceiling discussions.  This way, he's strengthened. 

Why doesn't the leadership see this? 

Chemical weapons were being thrown around the Middle East for years in the 80s and Reagan NEVER intervened.
