NATO will not participate in operations against Syria
« on: September 02, 2013, 04:29:53 pm »
NATO's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that the North Atlantic alliance would not take part in operations against Syria. According to him, NATO was consulting on the matter and in the event of a crisis was ready to defend Turkey, but did not see any other options for intervention in the conflict.

Rasmussen also said that according to his information, it is the regime of President Bashar al-Assad that is responsible for the chemical attack in a suburb of Damascus on August 21.

So if Turkey goes with the initial attack coalition, Syria retaliates against Turkey, and that paves a justification for NATO to punish Assad's Syria.

Under Erdowan - BTW Obama's closest friend in the region - Turkey has rapidly lost all gains it had made toward a democratic society.....

Syria might do something that would be taken as an attack (or a threat to attack) on Turkey even without Turkey joining the initial coalition, so you may be correct that Turkey represents the linch pin for getting NATO involved in Obama's little foreign adventure.
